Job summary

The City of Mesquite is seeking a Recreation Official to officiate youth sports, monitor activities, and promote safe and fair play by applying current rules and regulations. You will lead and monitor various sports, officiate events, and address rules infractions with appropriate penalties.

Responsibilities include equipment and field inspections for safety, attending required trainings and certifications, coordinating with officials and staff, and enforcing recreation policies.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of first aid and safety practices.
• Knowledge of City and Department policies, federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations and licensing requirements.
• Sports rules and regulations.
• Sports field layouts.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a representative of the City of Mesquite, demonstrating a positive attitude and progressive actions through the display of professionalism, courtesy, and appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions with other employees and with the public.
• Lead and/or monitor various activities, sports, and games.
• Officiate at sporting events, games, and competitions; maintain standards of play and ensure that game rules are observed.
• Resolve claims of rules infractions or complaints by participants and/or coaches and assess penalties according to regulations.
• Report to immediate supervisor regarding sporting activities, complaints made, and actions taken or needed to include disciplinary action.
• Inspect sporting equipment, participant uniforms, playing surface and surrounding area to ensure compliance with safety regulations; set up equipment prior to events and clean up after.
• Learn rules and regulations, and related hand signals; attend scheduled training and meet certification requirements of recreation officials; explain rules.
• Confer with other officials, scorekeepers, participants, coaches and supervisors to provide information, coordinate activities, and discuss problems; enforce sportsmanship program.
• May assist with various programs including supervision, coaching, umpiring, refereeing, score keeping, etc.
• Direct participants to assigned areas before competition begins; provide instructions and guidance as necessary.
• Assist in enforcing Recreation Center policies to patrons.
• Be dependable and meet acceptable attendance requirements.
• Follow all applicable safety rules and regulations; adhere to dress, grooming and uniform standards; arrive on time for scheduled shifts.
