Job summary

Indian Trails Library District in Wheeling, IL seeks a Youth Services Assistant to join our collaborative, friendly team. This part-time position averages about 21 hours per week and focuses on creating a welcoming experience for children, teens, and caregivers.

The role involves staffing the reference desk, assisting with programs and outreach, helping patrons with devices, and staying current with children’s literature to offer informed readers’ advisory. Flexible shifts are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or minimum 2 years relevant experience.
• Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
• Experience working with children.
• Ability to communicate effectively and work independently or as part of a team.
• Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office products.
• Flexible to work days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Fluency in a second language is desirable.
• Reliable transportation to arrive on time for scheduled shifts.

Responsibilities

• Welcoming children, teens and caregivers to the Youth Services area.
• Staffing the reference desk and assisting members in-person and over the phone.
• Providing exceptional customer service to create a welcoming environment.
• Assisting children and caregivers in finding information and materials.
• Helping members use e-resources, computers, iPads, and other devices.
• Staying current with children’s literature to guide readers’ advisory.
• Supporting programming and outreach as needed.
• Maintaining the collection as needed.
• Assisting Youth Services staff on various projects.
