Job description

The Parks & Recreation Youth Sports program is oriented toward providing a healthy recreational and social learning experience for children.

Fun and sportsmanship are emphasized rather than competitive attitudes. Our team seeks to provide the best possible experience for children in our programs.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for energetic people to referee our youth program’s games. Our programming includes indoor and outdoor soccer, youth basketball, and youth volleyball. The ideal candidate would have knowledge of how a game flows, the basic rules that control a game, and the ability to make decisions and stand by them. They should be punctual and have a solid understanding of timekeeping. Our referees are typically players who want to help younger players learn how to play their sport.

THE BENEFITS OF JOINING OUR TEAM

This is a great first job for young people who like to play sports, enjoy teaching kids and like being outside. Parks & Recreation is a supportive department that enjoys working with the diverse population of Juneau.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

This position typically works Saturdays, 9:00am-3:00pm at various fields or gyms, with the occasional weeknight game or Start Smart session.

  • Referee youth sports programs: indoor and outdoor soccer or youth basketball or youth volleyball, dependent on season
  • Help Recreation Coordinator with the Start Smart Sports program
  • Keep score for older youth age divisions
  • Keep time during games
  • Demonstrate good customer service skills

Youth sports games officials are responsible for ensuring that the players follow the rules of the game. They review the rules and regulations to ensure the game is conducted properly. Youth Games Officials ensure the safety of all participants by watching for unsafe behavior; enforcing league rules; and stopping play when behavior of the players or conditions are unsafe. Youth Games Officials also act in a teaching capacity; they explain calls to youth players and explain rules to coaches.

Other:

Not less than 14 years of age at time of appointment.

Prior experience in basketball, soccer and/or volleyball as a scorekeeper, official, coach or player. Knowledge of the rules is helpful, but not required.
