Position Summary
The YMCA Youth Basketball League (YBL) Referee supports a safe, fair, and engaging environment for youth basketball participants. This position is responsible for officiating games consistently, applying league rules, supporting sportsmanship, and helping maintain an organized game-day environment for players, coaches, families, and spectators.
This seasonal position primarily involves officiating youth basketball games on Saturdays and/or Sundays, with shifts averaging approximately 8 –16 hours per week. Additional weekday evening availability may be needed depending on program needs. Referees work under the direction of the Sports Coordinator and are expected to maintain consistent availability for the YBL season, scheduled from January 4th, 2027, through March 7th, 2027 .
Officiate Basketball Games: Apply basketball and league rules fairly and consistently while supporting sportsmanship and positive youth participation.
Support Safety: Monitor game activities and follow established safety procedures to support a safe and structured environment for players, coaches, staff, and spectators.
Support Youth Development: Help create an inclusive and respectful environment that encourages participation, teamwork, skill development, and positive interactions.
Coordinate Game-Day Activities: Manage the flow and timing of assigned games and work with staff to help games remain organized and on schedule.
Communicate Rules and Decisions: Clearly and respectfully explain calls, rules, and game expectations to players and coaches as appropriate .
Collaborate with Staff: Work with the Sports Coordinator, coaches, and other program staff to support effective game-day operations.
Maintain Reliable Attendance: Arrive on time and prepared for assigned shifts and communicate scheduling concerns according to established procedures.
Support Program Operations: Assist with equipment, gym setup, breakdown, and other game-day responsibilities as assigned.
Participate in Training and Feedback: Attend required trainings, evaluations, and supervision meetings related to the position.
The Youth Basketball Referee position primarily works in an indoor gymnasium environment at the Presidio YMCA’s Main Post facility, with occasional outdoor responsibilities depending on program activities or events.
The role involves regular movement throughout the court and facility to effectively observe and officiate games. Essential functions may include standing and walking for extended periods, changing direction during game play, bending, reaching, and moving or carrying program equipment weighing up to approximately 25 pounds.
The position involves regular interaction with youth, families, coaches, spectators, and staff in an active youth sports environment. Referees must be able to communicate game rules and decisions, respond to changing game-day needs, and follow established safety and program procedures.
