Job summary

The Greater Austin YMCA is seeking a dedicated Yoga Instructor to lead inclusive group classes and foster wellbeing among members of all experience levels. You will guide mindfulness, breathing techniques, and safe movement, while maintaining a supportive, welcoming environment that reflects the Y’s mission.

Ideal candidates will hold Yoga Alliance RYT-200 or equivalent certification, provide modifications for diverse abilities, and promote YMCA programs.

Qualifications

Job description

Help people move, grow, and feel their best. As a Yoga Instructor, you create an inclusive and supportive space where participants of all experience levels can improve their physical health, reduce stress, and build confidence through movement and mindfulness. Through safe instruction, encouragement, and meaningful connections, you help members strengthen their overall well-being while fostering a welcoming community that reflects the YMCA's mission and values.

How You Make an Impact

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver yoga classes that incorporate proper sequencing, alignment, breathing techniques, and mindfulness practices.
  • Modify poses and provide alternative options for participants with varying abilities or physical limitations.
  • Demonstrate and communicate proper form and technique to ensure participant safety.
  • Maintain a supportive and encouraging class environment that promotes personal growth, wellness, and confidence.
  • Manage classroom setup, including mats, props, and any additional equipment, and ensure the area is clean and safe before and after class.
  • Monitor class participants for safety and provide guidance or corrections as needed.
  • Promote the YMCA’s programs, events, and wellness initiatives, and engage with members to foster community participation.
  • Complete attendance records, incident reports, or other required documentation as directed by the YMCA.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development, staff meetings, and trainings to maintain best practices in fitness instruction and group exercise.
  • Lead by example the Y’s mission, vision, and values with program participants, members, staff, and guests.
  • Become an ambassador of the Y’s work and culture by sharing the story of who we are as an organization and brand.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

What You Bring to the Y

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
  • Current Yoga Instructor certification, such as Yoga Alliance RYT-200 or another nationally recognized yoga certification.
  • Ability to safely lead group yoga classes and provide modifications for participants with varying fitness levels, abilities, and physical limitations.
  • Knowledge of yoga principles, proper alignment, breathing techniques, and mindfulness practices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage, educate, and motivate participants.
  • Ability to maintain a calm, supportive, and professional presence while leading classes.
  • Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications preferred; if required for the role, certification must be obtained within a timeframe determined by the department.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and special events.
  • Team Player: Work collaboratively with others and support a positive team environment.
  • Communicates Effectively: Listen actively and communicate clearly with members and peers.
  • Customer Focused: Anticipates needs and ensures quality, member-centered service.
  • Fosters Belonging: Ensure everyone feels welcomed, respected, and included.
