The Somerville YMCA is seeking an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and engaging Yoga Instructor to join our Health & Wellness team. As a Yoga Instructor, you will lead safe, effective, and inclusive yoga classes for participants of varying skill levels while creating a welcoming environment that encourages healthy living, personal growth, and community connection. This role is ideal for an instructor who enjoys motivating others, building relationships, and delivering high-quality fitness experiences.
Pay: $40.00–$50.00 per hour
Job Type: Part-Time
Schedule: Days, evenings, and weekends as needed

What You’ll Do
- Design and teach safe, effective, and engaging yoga classes for participants of all abilities.
- Create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that encourages participation and personal growth.
- Modify poses and instruction to accommodate varying fitness levels and physical needs.
- Stay current with yoga and wellness trends and incorporate best practices into programming.
Promote Member Engagement
- Welcome participants and foster a strong sense of community within classes.
- Build positive relationships with members and learn participants’ names whenever possible.
- Provide education on wellness, mindfulness, and healthy lifestyle practices.
- Address participant questions, concerns, and feedback professionally and effectively.
Ensure Safety & Program Quality
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized exercise environment.
- Monitor participants for signs of discomfort or exercise-related distress.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies and complete incident reports as needed.
- Maintain accurate attendance records and program documentation.
Support YMCA Initiatives
- Assist with special events, member engagement activities, open houses, and health fairs.
- Serve as a positive ambassador for the YMCA mission and values.
- Collaborate with fellow instructors and wellness staff to enhance member experiences.
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum 18 years of age.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Current Yoga Instructor certification from a recognized organization.
- Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications (or ability to obtain upon hire).
- Minimum one year of yoga teaching or group fitness instruction experience.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.
- Ability to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for individuals of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
Preferred
- Additional Group Fitness certification(s).
- Experience teaching a variety of yoga formats and skill levels.
- Experience working in a community-based fitness, YMCA, or wellness setting.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to demonstrate yoga poses and movements safely and effectively.
- Ability to lift, move, and carry up to 45 pounds when necessary.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stretch, and remain active for extended periods.
- Adequate vision and hearing to supervise participants and respond to emergencies.
