The Acton Wakefield Watersheds Alliance is seeking a seasonal Youth Conservation Corps Crew Leader to lead a summer program focused on protecting water quality in Wakefield, NH, and Acton, ME. Job description

The Acton Wakefield Watersheds Alliance (AWWA) is seeking a seasonal Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) Crew Leader to lead our summer technical assistance program. Working to protect water quality across lakes and ponds in Wakefield, NH, and Acton, ME, the Crew Leader will direct a YCC team in installing erosion‑control landscape features to reduce stormwater pollution and educate homeowners on how stormwater can affect water quality. These projects beautify landscapes while also infiltrating runoff.

Responsibilities

• Oversee and manage a staff of youth crew members.
• Share the AWWA mission with local landowners and community members.
• Work with the Program Coordinator and YCC crew to design and install Best Management Practices (BMPs) to reduce pollution caused by erosion and stormwater runoff.
  • Plant vegetated buffers or rain gardens to catch water and sediment.
  • Stabilize trails and/or fill with crushed stone or mulch.
  • Install water bars to redirect runoff.
  • Dig infiltration trenches and drywells.
  • Install infiltration steps.
• Assist with presentations to community stakeholders to illustrate AWWA accomplishments.
• Maintain careful records of all YCC activities, including daily activities and timesheets.
• Maintain tools and inventory for YCC projects.

Education / Skills Required

This position requires a person who can work with the Program Coordinator to understand and implement the erosion control designs and train the crew in Best Management Practices. The candidate should have some experience or training in environmental practices and safe landscaping work habits, and prefer those pursuing an environmentally driven career path or studying environmental science or a related field. Responsibilities include leading and working with a high school‑age crew; being physically fit to perform eight hours of labor per day using hand tools such as shovels, wheelbarrows, rakes, picks, and hoes; interacting comfortably with stakeholders and homeowners; and promoting the YCC goals. The recommended minimum age is 19, and a driver’s license is required for transporting crew members and materials/tools.
