Job summary

Phoenix Fabricators and Erectors, LLC is seeking a yard operations lead to oversee loading, unloading, staging, and shipping of materials in our active industrial yard. You will coordinate daily shipping activities with the Logistics Manager and field teams, ensuring loads are balanced, secured, and documented.

The role requires forklift operation, attention to safety, and strong organization to manage multiple trucks and deadlines.

Qualifications

  • Forklift operation experience in an industrial or yard setting.

  • Experience leading a small team and coordinating multiple loads.

Responsibilities

  • Lead yard personnel and assign daily priorities for loading, unloading, staging, and material movement.

  • Safely load/unload trucks and verify load weight, balance, and securement.
  • Prepare bills of lading and ensure records match physical loads.
  • Maintain clear communication on shipment status and priorities.
  • Ensure PPE, safe procedures, and yard safety compliance.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and work alongside yard personnel, assigning daily priorities for loading, unloading, staging, material movement, and yard organization.
  • Coordinate daily shipping activities with the Logistics Manager and field teams to ensure materials and fabricated components are staged, loaded, and shipped according to project priorities.
  • Safely load and unload trucks using forklifts and approved material-handling equipment, including handling loads weighing up to 10,000 pounds.
  • Verify load weight, balance, stability, securement, placement, and staging sequence to support safe transportation, unloading, and field installation.
  • Prepare accurate shipping lists, bills of lading (BOLs), and related documentation, ensuring physical loads match shipping records before trucks are released.
  • Document quantities, job information, shortages, substitutions, and special shipping or unloading requirements and communicate discrepancies to the appropriate teams.
  • Maintain timely communication with the Logistics Manager and field personnel regarding shipment status, expected arrival, delays, shortages, and changing priorities.
  • Anticipate labor, equipment, staging, and scheduling needs and address or elevate potential conflicts before they affect shipments.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized yard that allows materials and finished components to be efficiently located, handled, and shipped.
  • Conduct required equipment inspections and ensure forklifts and other material-handling equipment are operated within rated capacities and company safety requirements.
  • Ensure employees follow required PPE, material-handling, load-securement, and yard safety procedures, stopping work and notifying management when unsafe conditions exist.
  • Coach and hold yard personnel accountable for safety, accuracy, productivity, communication, and completion of assigned responsibilities.

Physical Demands
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, reach, and climb on and off equipment, trucks, and trailers.
  • Frequently use hands and arms to handle materials, straps, chains, blocking, paperwork, and equipment controls.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment as required, using appropriate assistance or mechanical equipment when necessary.
  • Ability to safely operate forklifts and other approved material-handling equipment in an active industrial yard.
  • Requires sufficient vision and depth perception to judge distance, clearance, load position, equipment movement, and surrounding hazards.
  • Requires sufficient hearing and communication ability to work safely around trucks, forklifts, and other industrial equipment.
  • Ability to work on uneven ground and remain physically active throughout the workday.
  • Required personal protective equipment must be worn as directed.
Work Environment
  • Work is performed primarily outdoors in an active industrial and fabrication yard environment.
  • Regular exposure to changing weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind, sun, and mud.
  • Regular exposure to trucks, forklifts, fabricated steel components, moving equipment, and industrial yard traffic.
  • Work may involve moderate to loud noise levels.
  • Must be able to work safely around large and heavy loads, including loads weighing up to 10,000 pounds.
  • Position requires the ability to manage changing priorities, shipping deadlines, late trucks, material discrepancies, and other time-sensitive operational demands.
Position Requirements
Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience safely operating forklifts in an industrial, construction, fabrication, warehouse, or yard environment.
  • Working knowledge of loading, unloading, staging, load balance, load securement, and shipping and receiving practices.
  • Ability to read and accurately complete work orders, shipping lists, bills of lading, job information, part descriptions, quantities, and related documentation.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to coordinate multiple trucks, loads, priorities, and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Ability to lead a small team, assign work, provide direction, address performance issues, and maintain accountability.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills with strong attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Ability to remain professional, level-headed, and solution-focused while managing changing priorities and high-pressure situations.
  • Basic computer and data-entry skills for shipping documentation, records, and shipment communication.
  • Ability to complete required forklift training and authorization before independently operating company equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Previous experience in yard operations, shipping and receiving, industrial material handling, fabrication, construction, or a related environment.
  • Previous lead or supervisory experience.
  • Current forklift certification.
