Job summary

Simmons Foods, Inc. in Emporia, KS is seeking a Yard Driver to operate a semi-truck and trailer, and safely run a forklift to move raw and finished product within the facility. This role includes loading and unloading, washing equipment when needed, and completing all paperwork with accuracy.

Ideal candidates will have tractor/trailer operation experience and forklift licensing; a High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred. Ability to read, write, speak and understand English is required.

Responsibilities

• Complete all necessary paperwork and participate as a team member to support company objectives.
• Follow Simmons operating systems and safety regulations; identify issues and communicate improvements.

Job description

To operate a semi-truck and trailer combination as well as operate a forklift safely and efficiently to move raw and/or finished product.

Essential Position Responsibilities

• Operate a semi-truck and end dump, hopper bottom, tanker, or box trailer efficiently to move product to various locations within Simmons facility properties.
• Wash semi-truck and trailer in wash bay as needed.
• Load and Unload trailers using forklift to move product to the production floor.
• Complete all necessary paperwork.

Participates as a member of the Team. Participates in ongoing development, communication and implementation of team concepts, programs and policies; coordinates work to ensure best practices with all team members. Attends appropriate team meetings. As a member of the Team, fosters strong cohesiveness regarding all major issues; e.g., direction, annual plan, budget, policy changes, etc. Accepts responsibility to quickly identify any areas that lack cohesiveness, bringing them to the attention of the team leader and working with the team in a supportive manner to resolve issues and actively look for ways, and reinforces actions needed, to achieve synergy possible within the larger organization.

Simmons Operating systems principles and objectives (this competency appears in all job descriptions): Is familiar with Simmons’ established operating systems (e.g. quality, security, office environment, company policies); understands the responsibility to maintain familiarity with the systems and this position’s role in support of these systems - including a consideration of the impact of individual actions on the systems and the responsibility to communicate concerns and improvement ideas.

Physical Activities: Ability to work in a wet, noisy, humid, hot, and cold environment that has an unpleasant odor. Ability to hook and unhook trailers, including climbing on trucks to hook up hoses or lines, hand cranking trailer dollies, tarp and untarp trailers with a hank crank up to 30 trailers a shift if necessary.

Travel: Some travel between Simmons facilities may be necessary.

Technical Experience: May be required to obtain and maintain company issued forklift licenses. Must be able to follow established safety regulations.

Industry Experience: Some tractor/trailer operation experience required.

Minimum Education: Ability to read, write, and do basic math. Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.

Preferred Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
