Job summary

The Downriver Family YMCA, part of the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit, is hiring a Before and After School Care Site Assistant in Southgate, MI. You will support youth development and manage the assigned school site, focusing on social, emotional, physical, spiritual, and cognitive growth.

Responsibilities include planning daily curriculum-based activities, maintaining safe environments, coordinating with school and YMCA staff, and assisting with snacks and materials.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required (18+).
• Some experience supervising children preferred but not required.
• Meets state licensing and DHS clearance requirements.

Responsibilities

• Attends to children's needs while ensuring a safe, nurturing environment.
• Plans and leads curriculum-based activities approved by Site Supervisor.
• Sets up and cleans learning spaces and prepares materials.
• Maintains staff-to-child ratios and shares housekeeping tasks.
• Serves healthy snacks and completes required paperwork.
• Follows emergency procedures and participates in drills.
• Performs other duties as directed.

GENERAL FUNCTION

The Before and After School Care Site Assistant is responsible for general subversion and management of assigned school site, while assisting in the development of children’s social, emotional, physical, spiritual, and cognitive development.

SITE LOCATION PLACEMENT

The Site Assistant for the Downriver School Sites will receive their school site location will either be placed at Taylor Exemplar Academy, Wyandotte Public Schools, or Melvindale Public Schools , from Management, based on staff availability and levels in the area.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

• At a minimum, a high school diploma or equivalent is required (over 18+ years of age)
• Some experience supervising children is preferred, but not required

TRAINING/CERTIFICATIONS/PREREQUISITES

• Meets state-licensing agency requirement
• Achieves DHS Clearance, with documentation, prior to starting work
• Passes TB skin test within 30 days of hire
• CPR, First Aid, AED, and Child Safe certifications within 60 days of hire

ABILITIES & SKILLS

• Ability to participate in, plan, and lead all physical activities
• Ability to sit and stand from a seated position on the floor when interacting with children
• Capability to be outside for up to 30 minutes a day, year-round

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Attends to the needs of participating children at all times, while ensuring a safe and nurturing environment
• Plans and leads daily/monthly curriculum-based lesson plans and activities approved by the Site Supervisor
• Set-up and clean up physical learning environments and prepare necessary materials and supplies, ensuring all equipment and supplies meet maintenance and storage standards
• Establishes and maintains relationships with assigned school and YMCA staff and program participants through attendance of staff meetings, open houses, and PTA meetings
• Maintains appropriate staff-to-child ratios and assumes shared responsibility for housekeeping tasks
• Serves prepared healthy snacks to children and maintains required paperwork
• Has an understanding of all emergency site procedures and record drills
• Performs other assigned duties as directed by Supervisor
