Job description

Republic Affairs is a Washington, DC-based strategic communications firm that helps civic organizations operate with confidence, earn public trust, and advance their missions.

If you can write clear, persuasive copy fast and find the information to back it up, we want to hear from you.

About the role

As a Writer/Researcher, you’ll be a go-to writer across our client and advocacy work. That could mean a memo, website copy, messaging, a Substack post, or a piece in someone else’s voice, sometimes all in the same day. You’ll also handle research as needs come up, from briefings on the political landscape to media research and background on people and organizations, and anything else that our clients need to be successful.

The job calls for range, speed, and an instinct for turning research into tangible products.

Your responsibilities
  • Write memos, briefings, and reports.
  • Draft website copy, newsletters, and Substack posts.
  • Develop messaging and talking points.
  • Ghostwrite for clients when needed.
  • Research people, organizations, media coverage, and public records.
  • Fact-check and copy edit before anything goes out.
  • Handle quick-turn writing and research requests as they come in.
What we’re looking for
  • 2+ years of experience in writing, communications, journalism, campaigns, or a related field.
  • Clear, concise writing, and the ability to adjust tone for different audiences and formats.
  • You can make a complicated subject simple without getting it wrong.
  • You can put together a solid background on a person or organization quickly, using public records, news archives, and social media, and you know which sources to trust.
  • Ability to turn work around quickly and juggle several assignments at once.
  • You’re passionate about politics and follow the news closely.
  • Ability to be in our downtown DC office five days a week. This is not a remote or hybrid role.
Preferred qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with public records sources such as FEC filings, IRS 990s, and LexisNexis.
  • Experience in political, advocacy, or public affairs communications.
  • Comfort using AI tools to speed up writing and research.
  • Base salary range: $60,000 – $80,000, commensurate with experience
  • 100% covered medical insurance
  • 401(k) matching program
  • Metro-accessible, downtown DC location
  • Opportunities to learn, grow, and do work that supports organizations strengthening civic life
