Job description

Overview

The Department of Defense (DoD) is offering Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral internships or fellowships at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command – Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (USAMRDC WRAIR). This research opportunity is within the Center for Military Psychiatry and Neuroscience (CMPN) Integrated Systems Biology Branch, whose aim is to apply robust and precise molecular‑based solutions for military‑relevant health performance, resilience, and readiness.

Why Should I Apply? Under the guidance of a mentor, you will apply integrative biology approaches to understand the etiology of, and find solutions for, military‑relevant health issues. Research and analyses are designed to understand, compare, and combine animal studies and human studies, computational simulations, and biologics derived from human samples. The main research focus is the identification and characterization of biomarkers for PTSD, pain, and host responses to pathogens and radiation.

Learning Objectives
  • Learn whole genome sequencing.
  • Conduct metabolomic analysis.
  • Gain experience in Ingenuity Pathway Analysis.
  • Analyze omics data using commercial and publicly available tools for proteomics, genomics, and metabolomics.
  • Learn microbiome analysis using sequencing.
  • Understand new animal models for austere environments.
Location

Silver Spring, Maryland

Start Date

Appointments will be made immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection in coordination with the candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis.

Appointment Length

Appointments are initially for one year with the option to extend the appointment for up to four additional years, contingent upon project needs and funding availability.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate will have a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree in Bioinformatics, Neuroscience, Genetics, or another eligible discipline earned within five years of the appointment start date.

Highly competitive applicants will have education or experience in one or more of the following:

  • Animal models.
  • Biomarkers.
  • RNA and DNA isolation.
  • Data analysis and mining for military‑relevant health.
Eligibility Requirements
  • Citizenship: LPR or U.S. citizen.
  • Degree: Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree received within the last 60 months.
  • Disciplines:
    • Life Health and Medical Sciences: Bioinformatics, Biology (General), Biophysics, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Computational Biology, Genetics (including Genome Sciences), Neurosciences, Physiology.
    • Social and Behavioral Sciences.
