Job summary

Texas Children's is seeking a Wound Ostomy Nurse to provide specialized wound and ostomy care across acute, critical care and outpatient settings. The role supports neonatal to adult patients, prioritizes pediatric experience, and is based at the TCH Medical Center with full-time weekday shifts.

Qualified candidates hold a nursing degree, TX RN licensure, BLS, and WOCN education or active enrollment. CWOCN preferred; post-hire credentialing may be considered.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in nursing required.
• One year of nursing experience.
• Current Texas Board of Nursing licensure or Nursing Licensure Compact.
• BLS from American Heart Association.
• Graduate of a WOCN-accredited WOC nursing program or in progress with completion within 6 months.

Responsibilities

• Performs and documents comprehensive patient/family assessment.
• Identifies patient teaching, discharge planning, nutrition screening, and pain management needs.
• Coordinates care with health care team to meet patient needs.
• Participates in rounds/conferences to provide WOC input and records notes.
• Evaluates patient response and progress toward outcomes; adjusts as needed.
• Administers interventions per standards and policies; ensures safety and quality care.
• Engages patient/family to discuss feelings and provides psychosocial support.
• Keeps WOC nursing knowledge current through literature review and CE.

Education

Bachelor's degree in nursing

One (1) year nursing experience

Current licensure with Texas Board of Nursing

CPR - Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association

Graduate of a wound, ostomy, continence nursing education program accredited by the WOCN Society or enrolled in a WOCN-credited wound, ostomy, continence program

We are searching for a Wound Ostomy Nurse - to provide quality wound and ostomy nursing care to patients by assessing, planning, educating, implementing, and evaluating age-appropriate care in a manner that incorporates family centered principals and cost-effective care.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in nursing
• One (1) year nursing experience
• Current licensure with Texas Board of Nursing or Nursing licensure Compact
• CPR - Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association
• Graduate of a wound, ostomy, continence nursing education program accredited by the Wound Ostomy Continence Nurses (WOCN) Society or currently enrolled in a WOCN-credited wound, ostomy, continence program with completion of program within 6 months of assuming the role
• Maintains knowledge base by reading professional literature pertaining to specialty and completes continuing education as needed to maintain expertise in WOC nursing.
• Operate the following equipment: infusion pumps, electronic thermometers, non-invasive blood pressure, defibrillator, suction machine, cardiac monitor, scales, computers and any other role specific equipment.
• Prefer CWOCN Certified Wound/Ostomy/Continence RN, but can obtain post-hire

Specific Duties

• Performs and documents assessment of the patient/family including bio-physical, psychosocial, developmental (age appropriate), cultural, spiritual, and environmental needs in an organized and systematic manner.
• Identifies patient’s needs pertaining to patient teaching, discharge planning, growth and development, nutritional screening, functional status, and pain management.
• Determines which standards of care and practice apply to the patient; coordinates and communicates this information to other health care team members, in order to meet patient needs.
• Participates in interdisciplinary rounds and/or patient care conferences to provide input regarding the wound and ostomy perspective and documents in the medical record, as appropriate.
• Evaluates and documents patient’s response to the care and treatments provided and recognizes the patient’s progress toward meeting the desired outcomes and discusses with the patient/family.
• Executes therapeutic physician or nurse interventions according to established standards of practice and appropriate policies and procedures related to care delivery.
• Encourages patient/family to verbalize feelings (grief, frustration, etc.) and provides psychosocial support when necessary
• Demonstrates willingness and ability to acquire new knowledge relevant to pediatric nursing and/or WONS nursing and utilize new skills needed to improve individual, team, and organizational performance.
• Maintains knowledge base by reading professional literature pertaining to specialty and completes continuing education as
• needed to maintain expertise in WOC nursing.
