Job summary

Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions seeks a Director of Music and Liturgy to lead the parish’s music ministry and coordinate liturgical life in accord with Catholic teaching. You will direct choirs, plan liturgies, and collaborate with clergy and staff to create reverent, beautiful celebrations.

The role requires mentoring liturgical ministers, ensuring GIRM compliance, and fostering active participation of the faithful in worship throughout the liturgical year.

Qualifications

• Deep understanding of Catholic liturgy, theology, and Church documents on sacred music.
• Degree in music, liturgy, or related field or equivalent professional experience.
• Proficiency in organ, piano, and choral direction.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to inspire and collaborate with parishioners of all ages.
• Strong organizational and leadership skills, including scheduling, budgeting, and volunteer coordination.
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, Holy Days, and other parish events as required.

Responsibilities

• Direct, rehearse, and accompany music for Sunday Masses, Holy Day Masses, and other major parish liturgies.
• Lead and develop the Adult Choir and Children’s Choir to encourage participation and musical growth.
• Provide music leadership for School Masses, collaborating with school faculty and staff.
• Direct and accompany a choir of homeschool students, integrating choral formation and catechesis.
• Recruit, train, and schedule cantors and other music ministers.
• Regularly conduct sound checks to maintain sound quality in the worship space.
• Chair or participate actively in the Liturgy Commission to plan parish liturgies.
• Offer music and prayer meetings and other opportunities for spiritual enrichment.
• Provide adult education on the liturgy and its meaning throughout the liturgical year.
• Collaborate with the Art & Environment Committee, guiding seasonal décor in line with liturgical norms.
• Work closely with the Sacristan to ensure all liturgical needs are met.
• Collaborate with clergy and staff to prepare liturgies for special occasions.
• Form and mentor liturgical ministers (lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, altar servers).
• Ensure that liturgical practices follow the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) and diocesan guidelines.
• Serve as a liaison between clergy, staff, volunteers, and musicians to ensure smooth liturgical celebrations.
