The City of Lake Charles is seeking a General Maintenance Worker I to perform unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor under direct supervision. Start at $12.00 per hour with non-exempt status.

Responsibilities include cleaning around public buildings, operating trash and maintenance equipment, and performing other duties as assigned. A Louisiana driver's license is required; high school diploma or GED preferred; 1–3 months related experience may be considered.

General Maintenance Worker I

Salary Level: Start: $12.00 (R1)

FLSA Status: Non-exempt - Hourly

SUMMARY

Under direct supervision, this individual will perform manual labor of an unskilled and semi-skilled nature.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Pick up trash around public buildings.
  • Work on trash truck, white metal truck, or cherry picker as a laborer.
  • Perform any other assigned duties.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Ability to understand and follow simple oral instructions.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of general cleaning equipment.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess a valid Louisiana Driver's License.
