Defense Logistics Agency in Warner Robins, GA is seeking a skilled wood worker to assemble and repair wooden shipping containers, crates, and pallets, and to ensure all equipment and materials are ready for use.   • Maintains written records of production, work hours, costing, attendance, etc.; may use a computer.
  • Orients and trains new employees.
  • Provides information on potential performance problems.
  • Refers to applicable packing instructions.
  • Works from drawings or instructions to manufacture crates, boxes, and skids.
  • Determines requirements for special jobs, including materials and design.
  • Constructs containers, packing, labeling, and prepares items for shipment or storage.
  • Uses proper handling equipment for transfer and cleans the work site.

Duties

  • Ensures that all workers have enough work and are fully utilized.
  • Answers workers' questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directions.
  • Makes, repairs, and installs storage and shipping items such as boxes, small crates, pallets, dividers, assorted skids and storage bins using wood, wood composites and substitutes, steel bracing, and appropriate packing materials.
  • Spot checks completed work for compliance with supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines.
  • Maintains, as required, written records of production, work hours, costing, attendance, etc.; record keeping may require use of a computer. Orients and trains new employees.
  • Makes suggestions for performance awards.
  • Provides information on potential performance problems.
  • Refers to applicable instructions for packing.
  • Works from local process specifications, blueprints, sketches, drawings, or from written or verbal instructions, in manufacturing wood crates, boxes and skids.
  • Incumbent determines requirements for special jobs, such as selecting materials, designing boxes, crates, etc., including trusses, bracing and strapping.
  • Construction of necessary containers, packing, labeling and preparing items for shipment or storage.
  • Uses proper handling equipment for transfer and provides necessary cleanup of work site.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Effort: The wood worker uses power and manual tools while performing repetitive, tiring work for long periods of time. Frequent standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and arm movement is required. Sometimes works in cramped or awkward positions. The work requires continuous lifting, carrying, and using tools and materials that weigh up to 60 pounds. Sometimes heavier weights are lifted and moved with the assistance of others or lifting devices such as floor hoists or cranes.

Working Conditions: Work is normally performed in a shop or other enclosed areas which may be drafty, damp, or overheated. Sometimes employee works outside in fair weather, and occasionally in bad weather. Frequently exposed to sawdust, as well as other nose and lung irritations. Frequent exposure to loud noises from power saws, hammers, etc. Subject to possible cuts from flying wooden particles, nails, fasteners, etc. Maybe required to wear protective eyeglasses, ear devices, or gloves.

Drug-Free Workplace Policy

The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is committed to maintaining a safe, drug-free workplace. All DLA employees are required to refrain from illegal drug use on and off duty. DLA conducts pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, and random drug testing.

Applicants tentatively selected for employment in testing designated positions will undergo a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
