Position: Women’s Soccer Assistant Coach (Coaching Assistant -12 Month)

Type: Part‑time, Temporary

Position Overview: The Athletics Department at California State University, Bakersfield, a NCAA Division I institution, invites applications for a Women’s Soccer Assistant Coach. This is a non‑tenured position. The assistant coach will support the head coach in all aspects of team management, player development, game strategy, and recruiting efforts. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the growth and success of the program while fostering a positive and competitive team culture.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of NCAA Rules – strong understanding of all NCAA rules and regulations regarding compliance.


• Sport Experience – extensive knowledge of individual and team skills with the ability to teach these skills.


• Recruiting – ability to evaluate and compare athletic talent for potential growth and development of student‑athletes; maintain correspondence with prospects via e‑mail, letters, and phone.


• Academic Monitoring – ability to establish and monitor an academic system ensuring academic success for student‑athletes.


• Travel – ability to plan, organize, and execute travel arrangements.


• Computer Skills – computer literacy.


• Communication Skills – high level communication skills with student‑athletes, prospective student‑athletes, coaches, counselors, parents, and boosters.


• Fundraising – ability to develop sports community support and fundraising.


• Upon hire, an NCAA Coach’s Certification and 15 passenger van driving certification are required.


• Ability to contribute to overall team strategy and program development.


• Strong organizational skills with the ability to assist in multiple areas of program operations.


• Ability to work collaboratively within a coaching staff environment.

Major Job Duties

• Ensure effective teaching and instruction of all technical skill areas to student‑athletes.


• Teach and instruct student‑athletes in the sport, using the coach’s background and experience to decide instruction most beneficial to the team.


• Assist the Head Coach in overall program planning and daily operations, including practice planning, scheduling, and team coordination.


• Develop team and individual strategies to maximize winning chances, through on‑court/field instruction and video instruction.


• Design instructional programs and guide student‑athletes on implementing game plans for each competition.


• Support game‑day operations, including scouting reports, opponent analysis, and in‑game adjustments.


• Travel to events and evaluate potential student‑athlete talent, correspond with prospects via e‑mail, phone, and face‑to‑face conversations.


• Complete all necessary compliance and institutional documentation.


• Recruit student‑athletes who meet university academic and athletic standards.


• Ensure athletes’ academic progress by working with academic support staff.


• Assist in monitoring student‑athlete well‑being, coordinating with athletic training and support services.


• Work with the NCAA Compliance Office to ensure compliance with all rules and regulations.


• Manage an annual budget, including fiscal planning.


• Coordinate team meetings, film sessions, and administrative tasks related to team operations.


• Assist in equipment coordination and inventory management.


• Promote the program to the public, media, donors, the university community, and the general public to increase visibility and revenues.


• Participate in community outreach and program engagement activities to promote the women’s soccer program.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution of higher education and two or more years of work experience coaching collegiate soccer. Demonstrated experience recruiting prospective soccer student‑athletes in a collegiate setting. The candidate must possess excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills to interact with a large variety of constituents.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience coaching collegiate soccer at the NCAA Division I level.


• Experience recruiting NCAA Division I student‑athletes.

Compensation

The full‑time equivalent (1.0 FTE) monthly salary range is $6,288–$7,658, in accordance with the CSU Unit 3 salary schedule. This appointment is part‑time at 0.5 FTE (20–40 hours per week). Salary will be prorated based on time base. At 0.5 FTE, the approximate monthly salary range is $3,144–$3,829. Anticipated hiring range: $3,144–$3,750 monthly; actual salary is commensurate with education and experience.
