Job summary

Idaho National Laboratory in Idaho Falls seeks a Wireless Simulation Intern for Summer 2027 to model classical and quantum radar approaches for detecting low‑RCS targets and tracking drones. You may develop multi‑agent reinforcement learning for spectrum sharing, reporting to the Plant Optimization team on-site at ID Falls.

Ideal candidates are enrolled in a Master’s or Doctoral program in Electrical Engineering, CS, or Applied Mathematics with a minimum 3.0 GPA, and eligible for CPT/OPT.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a Master or Doctorate program in EE, CS, or Applied Math.
  • Minimum overall 3.0 GPA required.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. (including CPT/OPT) required.
  • Resume or CV required.
  • Official transcripts not required but unofficial copies encouraged.
  • Current class schedule with credits required.
  • Experience with MATLAB and Python preferred.

Wireless simulation Intern - Summer 2027

Idaho Falls, ID, United States (On-site)

Job Description

In this internship you will support advanced radar research by modeling and evaluating classical and quantum-radar approaches for detecting and tracking low-RCS targets, high-speed drones, and multiple targets. You may also develop multi-agent reinforcement learning algorithms to improve spectrum sharing. Reporting to the Plant Optimization team. This team works a 9x80 schedule onsite at our Idaho Falls campus. Start date and duration of internship vary based on project and student availability. You may be eligible for course credit for this internship if approved by your university.

  • Enrolled full time in a Master Degree Program, or Doctorate Degree Program at an accredited college/university studying Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or closely related field
  • A minimum overall 3.0 GPA
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. (including CPT and OPT)
  • Current Resume or CV
  • Unofficial Transcripts (include current and completed degree programs)
  • Current class schedule and number of credits
  • Experience/coursework in MATLAB and Python

The Ideal candidate will possess

  • High performance computing modeling and simulation methods experience/coursework in Markov-Chains, Bayesion Models, Discrete Event, Stochastic Random Process
  • Systems modeled experience/coursework in Critical Infrastructure
  • Statistics and big data analysis experience/coursework in Spatial Modeling and Geostatistics, Uncertainty Analysis and Error Propagation
  • Experience/Coursework in radar simulation tools

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Undergraduate Internships ($26.94/hour - $32.41/hour)
  • Masters Internships ($35.34/hour - $37.73/hour)
  • PhD Internships Pre-Candidacy ($36.83/hour - $39.33/hour)
  • PhD Internships Post-Candidacy ($38.65/hour - $41.29/hour)
  • Eligible interns are provided with paid holiday time off, and many of our internships offer travel reimbursements
  • Multi-Level: Internships are typically multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on degree field and level of education.

Physical requirement


While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, use hands to handle materials, manipulate tools, type on a keyboard, reach with hands and arms, and operate job-related equipment.
