WIRE & SINKER EDM MACHINIST
Join Our Team at Bullen Ultrasonics - Where Precision Meets Innovation
About The Opportunity
Are you ready to put your EDM expertise to work in a role where precision, problem-solving, and process improvement come together? At Bullen Ultrasonics, you will do more than run equipment. You will help shape dependable machining processes, solve challenging production issues, and share your knowledge with the people who bring those processes to life every day.
As our Wire and Sinker EDM Machinist, you will set up, program, and operate both sinker and wire EDM equipment to create high-quality parts and tooling to exact specifications. This role places special emphasis on sinker EDM process development while continuing to support wire EDM work as an important part of the position. When trained and needed, you may also support related machining processes, including Ultrasonic Machining.
Why Bullen Ultrasonics?
CULTURE
Join a team grounded in excellence, humility, integrity, and teamwork. At Bullen, your experience, ideas, and contributions are valued.
INNOVATION
Put your skills to work in a specialized machining environment where precision, process development, creative problem-solving, and continuous improvement matter.
MEANINGFUL IMPACT
Help turn challenging machining requirements into reliable, repeatable processes while supporting production employees and delivering high-quality results for our customers.
SAFETY AND QUALITY
Work in an environment where safe practices, clean work areas, responsible machine care, and a commitment to quality are essential parts of how we operate.
What You’ll Do
- Plan the Work: Review drawings, work instructions, customer specifications, and inspection requirements, then plan complete sinker and wire EDM setups.
- Program with Precision: Program wire and sinker EDM operations using machine controls, standard programming methods, and approved CAM software, including Mastercam.
- Dial In the Process: Select and adjust machining parameters, offsets, cutting strategies, and finish passes to achieve required dimensions, tolerances, surface finishes, quality, and productivity.
- Own Wire EDM Setups: Manage wire loading or threading, start-hole preparation, flushing, alignment, and recovery from wire breaks.
- Develop Sinker EDM Setups: Handle electrode installation, centering, orbiting or offset strategy, dielectric flow, and electrode wear compensation.
- Build Better Processes: Develop, optimize, troubleshoot, and document sinker EDM processes on Makino equipment.
- Create the Right Tools: Prepare, inspect, identify, and maintain electrodes, tooling, fixtures, workholding, and setup components. Create or modify tooling and fixture designs from part drawings and coordinate needed materials.
- Verify the Results: Inspect completed work using calipers, micrometers, indicators, and other required measurement devices.
- Solve Problems Together: Partner with operators, engineering, quality, management, and vendors to resolve process, tooling, electrode, equipment, or quality issues.
- Share Your Expertise: Train production personnel on approved sinker EDM processes, setup practices, and operating requirements.
- Keep Work on Track: Complete production, inspection, setup, maintenance, and quality documentation accurately and on time.
- Care for the Equipment: Perform routine machine care and preventive maintenance, protect materials and tooling, and maintain clean and safe work areas.
- Support Related Operations: Operate surface grinders, belt sanders, hole-making equipment, and multi-axis drilling equipment when trained and authorized. Apply applicable Bullen Quality Management System procedures and support Ultrasonic Impact Grinding or other machining processes as needed when trained.
What We’re Looking For
- Education and Training: High school diploma or equivalent required; technical school coursework, a certificate, apprenticeship, or comparable technical training is preferred.
- EDM Experience: Hands‑on experience setting up, programming, and operating sinker EDM equipment is required. An equivalent combination of technical education, training, and relevant machining experience may be considered. Wire EDM experience is a plus.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of sinker EDM principles, process development, setup practices, electrodes, tooling, dielectric systems, offsets, and troubleshooting, along with working knowledge of wire EDM setup practices, flushing systems, offsets, and process troubleshooting.
- Programming Skills: Proficiency using Mastercam to develop, modify, and troubleshoot machining programs for tooling, fixtures, and related production applications.
- Makino Experience: Experience developing, optimizing, troubleshooting, and documenting sinker EDM processes on Makino equipment.
- Process Development: Proven ability to develop stable, repeatable EDM processes, document standard work, train production associates, and transfer processes into production.
- Drawing and Inspection Skills: Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, geometric dimensions and tolerances, work instructions, technical procedures, and inspection requirements, and to use common measurement and inspection tools accurately.
- Math and Problem‑Solving: Ability to perform calculations involving proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume; apply basic algebra and geometry; gather and evaluate information; determine root causes; and draw sound conclusions.
- Communication and Teamwork: Clear written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work independently with limited supervision, and the ability to contribute effectively in a team environment.
- Professional Approach: Strong attention to detail, organization, time management, professionalism, and commitment to quality.
Your Impact
Your expertise will help turn demanding machining requirements into accurate, repeatable results. Success in this role means producing quality parts, tooling, fixtures, setups, and documentation on schedule; controlling and troubleshooting EDM processes effectively; supporting safety and quality requirements; and successfully handing developed processes off to production machinists for consistent execution.
