Job summary

The State of Indiana, through INDOT, is seeking seasonal winter maintenance workers based in the Gary Sub District. This year’s role focuses on snow and ice removal, traffic sign repairs, and winter-related duties using standard maintenance equipment.

A CDL is required, and interviews will be held in Gary, IN. Starting immediately, you can earn $21.00 per hour with a potential sign‑on bonus and retention incentive for full‑time hires meeting timing requirements.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or HSE preferred.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Class A or Class B CDL.
• Required to pass a drug test as a condition of employment.
• Ability to move 50 pounds and perform physical tasks.

Responsibilities

• Operate highway maintenance and traffic equipment to maintain highways and right‑of‑way.
• Move and load supplies and materials.
• Winter operations including snow and ice removal.
• Emergency response tasks: traffic control, lane closures, signs and barricades.
• Perform basic equipment maintenance and pre‑trip inspections.
• Adhere to INDOT safety policies and document work in the system.

Role Overview

A CDL isrequired for this position.

This position is responsible for performing general highway maintenance duties that keep INDOT assets in good working condition to ensure customer satisfaction. Seasonal Winter Program Workers perform snow and ice removal and related maintenance duties by operation of snow plow, and other winter operations duties as required. Traffic maintenance duties such as repairing and installing traffic signs and pavement markings are also required job duties for this position.

Retention Bonus:

A $500 retention bonus offered to Winter Seasonal Maintenance Worker working full-time hired onor before 12/7/26 who stay through 3/27/27.

This Seasonal Winter position is in INDOT's Gary Sub District, locations include: Gary, Miller, andCrown Point.

Pay Rate:

This position pays an hourly rate of $21.00.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

• Operate basic highway maintenance and traffic equipment to maintain, repair, and clean highways and right-of-way.
• Moveand load supplies and materials.
• Winter operationduties including snow and ice removal.
• Perform emergency response activities such as: clean-up, traffic control, lane closures, placement of signs, and erecting barricades.
• Perform equipment maintenance such as: minor repairs, preventative maintenance, refueling, and pre-trip inspections.
• Comply with INDOT Safety Policies and Procedures.;
• Perform job documentation tasks such as entry into the Work Management System (WMS).

• Must have the ability to move 50 pounds.
• Must have the ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing, and walking for long periods of time.
• Must have the ability to endure exposure to inclement weather.
