Job summary

GEV Wind Power seeks enthusiastic entry-level Technicians for a 2-year Apprenticeship Program focused on composite fiberglass blade repair. You will work under a journeyman, learn safety, and travel 100% to windfarms across North America on an 8 week on/1 week off rotation.

Ideal candidates are recent graduates from wind energy or related programs or veterans with mechanical aptitude. Must be comfortable with heights, driving, and a physically demanding schedule.

Qualifications

• Graduate from a trade or technical school focused on wind energy, composites, or related field, or military background.
• Must not be afraid of heights and able to work at height up to 400 feet.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to work with tools and equipment.
• IT literate (email, internet, iPad).
• Willing to travel extensively to windfarms across North America and drive long hours as required.
• Valid, current driver's license and ability to meet physical requirements.

Responsibilities

• Drive pickup with trailer from warehouse to jobsites.
• Climb wind turbines using internal ladders or lifts up to 400 feet.
• Identify and manage proper waste and chemical storage and disposal.
• Assist with wind farm traffic control and site safety checks.
• Review work instructions and repair specifications; assist journeyman.
• Prepare, mix and apply resins, epoxies and paint to repaired fiberglass.
• Rig/derig elevated platforms and manage tag lines.
• Operate electric chain hoist to lift materials to height.
• Load/unload materials and tooling; maintain good housekeeping.
• Attend daily safety checks and ensure PPE and equipment safety.

Job description

GEV Wind Power is seeking enthusiastic entry-level Technicians to join our 2-year Apprenticeship Program. This entry-level position is an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about renewable energy to kickstart their careers in the wind industry, specifically focusing on composite fiberglass blade repair. During the apprenticeship program, you will learn and perform the following tasks:

• Work under the direction and oversight of an experienced journeyman composite blade repair technician
• Travel 100% to operating windfarms and windfarms under construction across North America (subject to an 8 week on/1 week off rotation)
• Tasks taught and performed will include:
  • Drive a 1/2 or 3/4 ton pickup with a trailer from warehouse to jobsites
  • Climb wind turbines on wind farms using internal ladders or lifts up to 400 feet
  • Identify and perform proper waste and chemical storage and disposal
  • Assist with wind farm traffic control
  • Review and read work instructions and repair specifications
  • Test air quality, wind speed and temperature
  • Clean and perform good housekeeping worksite
  • Rig/derig and suspend/store elevated platforms and scaffolding, including managing, attending and securing tag lines
  • Operate and tend electric chain hoist to lift heavy bags to height up to 250 - 400 feet
  • Load and unload materials and tooling
  • Assist journeyman blade repair technician in performance of repairs
  • Grind damaged fiberglass, sand and clean damaged areas
  • Prepare, mix and apply resins, epoxies and paint to repaired fiberglass
  • Attend and perform daily safety checks including job safety hazard, vehicle inspections, PPE safety checks and inspection of tools & equipment

Qualifications:

• Prefer recent graduate of a trade or technical school focused on wind energy, composites, or a related field; or military background
• Must not be afraid of heights
• Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to work with tools and equipment.
• IT literate (email, internet, iPad)
• Willing to spend extensive time traveling in the field at jobsites across North America
• Ability to drive or travel up to 11 hours per day when required.
• Flexibility for changes of scope
• Ability to work well as a team and take guidance
• Valid, current driver's license
• Must be 21 years of age to be able to drive a company vehicle
• Must have a satisfactory criminal record, MVR and pre-employment drug screen
• Must be able to meet the strenuous physical requirements of climbing ladders 2 or more times per day up to 400 feet, bend, crawl, stoop, walk, stand, and lift up to 75 pounds (will be required to complete a fit-for-duty physical exam)
• Ability to wear a respirator and work safely with protective equipment
• Good vision (with corrective lenses if necessary) to perform detailed inspections, read instructions, and safely operate equipment.
• Comfortable working at heights and in varying weather conditions (from extreme heat to extreme cold)
• Authorized to work in the US without sponsorship
