Overview

The coder is responsible for abstracting all clinical and demographic data and accurately applying code assignment to all inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services with diagnoses, procedures and conditions as indicated in the patient medical record. Using a computerized encoding system, assigns ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT4/HCPCS, DRG and APCs in accordance with official coding and reimbursement guidelines from the American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association, and the American Health Information Management Association. All work is carried out in accordance with the Health Information Management department and the Tenor Health approved policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Abstract clinical and demographic data and apply code assignments for inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services according to patient medical records.
• Assign ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT4/HCPCS, DRG and APCs in compliance with official coding and reimbursement guidelines from relevant professional associations.
• Adhere to Health Information Management department policies and Tenor Health procedures.

Education

• High school diploma with ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT4/HCPCS coding knowledge and/or experience.
• Medical terminology and human anatomy and physiology knowledge required.

Experience / Specialized Skills / Aptitudes

• Working knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and CPT/HCPCS coding systems or strong clinical background.
• High degree of clerical accuracy and highly organized.
• Statistically and data oriented with good interpersonal skills, especially with medical staff.
• Process-oriented, multi-tracked, and able to find efficient, accurate ways to complete tasks.
• Computer skills desirable and ability to communicate effectively.

Licenses / Certifications

• CCS is preferred but will accept candidates with prior coding experience.
