The Alaska Department of Fish & Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Wildlife Biologist 1/2 located in Palmer, Alaska!

What you will be doing:

This flexibly classed position is designed to facilitate entry into the professional wildlife biologist series and provides a training path in order to advance within the job class to the full working potential of Wildlife Biologist 2. The incumbent will learn all facets of wildlife program implementation by working closely with biologists to provide biological and technical support to wildlife management programs in Regions IV which stretches west from the Wrangell-St. Elias Range, through the Alaska Peninsula, to the end of the Aleutian chain and Pribilof Islands. Through guidance and training, this position will oversee the daily operations of Division of Wildlife Conservation’s Public Wildlife Information Center in Palmer, the supervision of technical staff, and the dissemination of wildlife information to the public and other area offices as the regional permitter and as the primary regional representative on the Regulations, Information, Permitting and Harvest Implementation Team.

The working environment you can expect:

This position, based in Palmer administers and participates in wildlife management programs across DWC’s Regions IV & V. The incumbent regularly interacts with members of the public issuing licenses, permits, and collects harvest and field information from the public's hunting and subsistence activities. Daily work environment spans from issuing permits and licenses, report writing, data analysis, interacting with stakeholders, and responding to nuisance wildlife issues in the front country to conducting wildlife surveys, investigations, and handling wildlife in the field. This position directly oversees two Fish and Wildlife Technician and other shared staff indirectly.

Wildlife Biology: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of wildlife, including classification, taxonomy, population dynamics, distribution, habitat requirements, life histories, reproduction, behaviors, conservation, and care of wildlife.

Supervision: Plans, distributes, and monitors work assignments; sets task priorities; evaluates work performance and provides feedback to others on their performance; ensures that staff are appropriately selected, utilized, and developed, and that they are treated in a fair and equitable manner.

Firearms: Knowledge of firearm usage and related issues, such as ammunition, range regulations and safety.

Customer Service: Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the

Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.

Research: Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry; including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and the reporting of results.

Special Note:

Valid Driver`s License required.

Ability to legally carry a firearm.

First Aid/CPR certification. Training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee.

Deputization as a commissioned Fish and Game Peace Officer.

Wildlife chemical immobilization certification.

Wildlife capture and handling certification.

Minimum Qualifications
Wildlife Biologist 1

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management.

Substitution:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

  • at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
  • at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
Special Note:

"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.

Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.

An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required bachelor's degree within six months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.

Wildlife Biologist 2:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management.

AND

One year of professional level biologist experience. The required professional biologist experience is met by service as a Wildlife Biologist 1, Fishery Biologist 1, or Habitat Biologist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitutions:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

  • at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population
