A field engineer is a professional who works at job sites other than the main company office or headquarters. This person often services clients at their homes or businesses. He or she may work in a variety of fields, and can be responsible for installing hardware, servicing a machine, or the maintenance and repair of already-installed products.

Responsibilities
  • Install hardware, service machines, and maintain and repair already-installed products.
  • Travel to client sites, often for extended periods, to perform repairs on specialized equipment.
  • Work independently or as part of a team, depending on company requirements.
  • Use personal tools and transportation when not provided by the employer; some companies provide vehicles and reimbursement for miles traveled.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Strong familiarity with the product and service area.
  • Creativity, problem–solving abilities, and strong communication skills.
  • Fine motor skills and dexterity.
  • On‑the‑job experience is typical; formal training or apprenticeship in a specialized field is preferred.
Education & Training

Training programs, degrees, and apprenticeships in a variety of subjects—including utilities, construction, engineering, pest control, plumbing, computer programming, and electronics—are common paths to becoming a field engineer.

Work Conditions

The day‑to‑day schedule of a field engineer varies depending on the area of expertise, the company, and the willingness to travel. Some may travel a day or more to repair specialized equipment, while others may perform tasks within their own neighborhoods. A self‑employed engineer may work out of his or her own home and create a flexible schedule.

Continuing education may be required, especially at technologically‑based companies, and may be paid for by the employer to keep up with changing products and services.
