Responsibilities

  • Lays out and installs underground pipe according to blueprints, plans, and grade stakes.
  • Cuts pipe to required lengths and bevels edges when necessary.
  • Aligns and positions pipe to ensure proper fit, jointing, and grade.
  • Installs and seals joints with gaskets, glue, or other approved methods.
  • Connects pipe sections using clamps, screws, bolts, cement, or welding equipment as required.
  • Assists with installation of manholes, inlets, valves, fittings, and related structures.
  • Works closely with equipment operators during excavation and backfilling activities.
  • Checks slopes, elevations, and pipe grades to ensure compliance with project specifications.
  • Uses hand tools, lasers, and levels to ensure accuracy of pipe alignment and grade.
  • Monitors trench safety and ensures compliance with OSHA excavation standards.
  • Assists in general labor duties as assigned by the Foreman or Superintendent.
  • Maintains equipment and tools to ensure long lasting use.

Job description

This position is accountable for installing underground wet utility systems including water mains, sanitary sewers, and storm drainage systems. Work includes measuring, cutting, and laying pipe, connecting joints, aligning and leveling pipe to grade specifications, and ensuring proper bedding, backfilling, and compaction. The Wet Utility Pipelayer is also responsible for assisting equipment operators, maintaining a safe trench environment, and ensuring compliance with all safety and quality standards.

The incumbent must have the ability and flexibility to work different shifts and long hours (8-12 hours). Weekend work and extra hours occur according to production needs and at the discretion of the Crew Supervisor.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of 3+of experience in wet utility or underground pipe installation is required. Knowledge of water, sanitary, and storm sewer systems is strongly preferred. In addition, the incumbent must:

  • Be able to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and grade stakes.
  • Be knowledgeable of trenching, shoring, and excavation safety standards.
  • Be able to lift, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and perform other physical activities as needed.
  • Work effectively as part of a team and communicate clearly with supervisors and crew members.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.

The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.

This individual must also have the ability to identify critical issues and formulate action plans with all levels of management, including corporate and executive.

The incumbent must possess the ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident and as directed by the Safety Representative or other management personnel. Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency arise .

In addition, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
