Job summary

West Virginia is seeking a creative Social Media Specialist to tell the state's story across digital platforms. The role creates and publishes engaging content—photos, videos, graphics, and written pieces—and covers events and initiatives for West Virginians.

You will work with the communications team in a fast-paced environment, turning moments into compelling content, with occasional evening and travel assignments. Reports to the Director of Communications.

Qualifications

  • Photography and videography skills with an eye for compelling moments.
  • Experience shooting and editing video for social and digital platforms.
  • Experience creating graphics and other visual content.
  • Working knowledge of major social media platforms and how content should differ across platforms.
  • Ability to produce quality content quickly under deadline.
  • Strong news judgment and an instinct for identifying content that will connect with an audience.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and shift priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a communications team.
  • Professional judgment and discretion when working around sensitive or confidential information.

Responsibilities

  • Create original social media content to be shared across major platforms (Facebook, X, YouTube, etc.).
  • Capture high-quality photos and video at press conferences, events, meetings, and travels.
  • Produce and edit short-form vertical video (Reels, Shorts, etc.).
  • Develop longer-form video content (recaps, interviews, explainers, features).
  • Create graphics, social cards and visuals to support announcements and events.
  • Identify moments, quotes, images, and clips for quick social content creation.
  • Publish and manage content across platforms, adapting for each audience.
  • Provide real-time social media coverage during events and travel.
  • Explain policy initiatives via accessible visual storytelling.
  • Monitor platform performance and use analytics to improve content and engagement.
  • Coordinate with communications staff to ensure accuracy and timely messaging.
  • Be available for occasional evenings, weekends, and travel as required.
