Job summary

Bechtel is seeking a Welding Superintendent for the Lake Charles LNG project to supervise welding operations, lead craft teams, and ensure schedules, budgets, and quality are met on site along the U.S. Gulf Coast.

The role requires extensive welding supervision experience, LNG construction knowledge, and strong ES&H leadership to champion a ZERO-accident program and coordinate with subcontractors and labor relations.

Qualifications

• Minimum 10–12 years industry welding experience and welding supervision, with at least 3 years Bechtel experience.
• Experience supervising craft on LNG construction projects; knowledge of supervisory functions for field welding.

Responsibilities

• Provide ES&H leadership to welding personnel and lead safety meetings.
• Ensure work complies with specifications, schedules and budgets.
• Monitor craft activities to ensure compliance with codes and standards.
• Review time records and subcontractor mobilization/demobilization.
• Plan staffing and equipment, and maintain 90-day and 3-week look-ahead labor forecasts.

Project Overview

Louisiana LNG is located approximately 11 miles southwest of Lake Charles, Louisiana. The project includes a mid-scale, mixed-refrigerant Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) production and export facility on the west side of the Calcasieu River. There are five identical process plants. Each process plant consists of one gas pre-treatment unit, one condensate stabilization unit, and four Chart heavy hydrocarbon (HHC) removal and liquefaction groups. The facility will include associated utilities, refrigerant storage, three 235,000m3 full-containment LNG storage tanks, and three marine berths.

Job Summary

The Welding Superintendent is responsible for supervising and directing welding operations across the Project. Supervises and directs craft professionals, subordinate supervisors, and others, as assigned. Ensures assigned construction performance is following specifications and within schedules and budgets.

Major Responsibilities

• Provide ES&H leadership to personnel assigned to the Welding department.
• This includes preparation and implementation of safety procedures and leading Bechtel and subcontractor safety meetings.
• Inspect site for unsafe conditions and practices and take appropriate corrective action to correct breaches.
• Coordinate safety training and enforce safe work practices at all times in conjunction with the Environmental Safety and Health Supervisor.
• Champion the cause of ZERO Accident Philosophy.
• Ensure that Bechtel and local/national safety codes, requirements and standards are being complied with within assigned area of responsibility.
• Monitor the activities of craft to ensure compliance with specifications and schedules.
• Responsible for the cost, schedule and optimization of craft labor and maintaining the 90 day and 3 week look ahead schedules for labor and equipment.
• Interface with Industrial Relations for craft recruitment and training programs.
• Review craft time records using established automated tools.
• Review and approve subcontractor equipment/personnel mobilization and demobilization
• Responsible for implementing corporate project policies, procedures, and instructions for nightshift operations.

Additional Responsibilities

• Provide input to quantity tracking applications and report weekly installed quantities to Project Controls.
• Prepare material requisitions for tools and consumables and coordinate through Procurement to obtain these materials.
• Prepare reports and forecasts, including summary of construction progress, craft personnel forecasts, and expenditures forecasts.
• Plan the staffing and equipment required to execute the job.
• Perform employee reviews and identify training and development opportunities.
• Perform other duties as required by Lead Welding Superintendent.
• Assist in performing construction testing as required.
• Coordinate with the General Foreman to hire craft labor to execute work.
• Coordinate established area operational plans.

Education And Experience Requirements

• Minimum of 10 to 12 years industry experience in welding and welding supervision with a minimum 3 years Bechtel experience. Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to field welding activities.

Required Knowledge And Skills

• Experience on an LNG construction site especially along the U.S. Gulf Coast.
• Heavy industrial direct hire construction experience commensurate with the type of work to be undertaken.
• Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to field welding activities.
• Must have extensive experience and practical skills for SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, and FCAW welding processes
• Experience in oil, gas, refinery, petrochemical, minerals processing or power generating station construction is preferred.
• Good communication skills, both verbal and written Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications.
• Working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards.
• Excellent communication and problem-solving ability.
• Demonstrated ability to manage and lead teams.

Additional Information: Work requires the physical ability to conduct field inspections including but not limited to: extensive walking in and around a construction site often in high heat and high humidity conditions, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, working on elevated platforms, working on uneven surfaces, and working in small or confined spaces. Some lifting may be required. Must have the ability to walk into and out of the project (enter/egress). Must be able to use appropriate standard issued Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) required for each assigned task (i.e. harness, life vest, lift buckets, etc.).
