Job summary

HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding seeks a welding specialist to improve welding equipment and processes. You will support welding operations, program and maintain equipment, and analyze weld concerns to drive quality and reliability.

Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, technical support, and training for welders while performing qualification tests and root cause analyses as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent with 10 years welding experience.
  • Associate degree or 2-year technical degree preferred; equivalent programs accepted.
  • Experience with multiple welding processes and vessel fabrication is expected.

The Role

Responsible for welding equipment and process improvements. Provides support to welding operations to improve quality results. Program and maintain welding equipment. Identify equipment needs, analyze weld concerns and recommend solutions to Engineering management team. Schedule and execute preventive maintenance. Provide technical support and training to welders. Performs a variety of technical welding operations such as procedure qualification test assemblies, filler metal conformance tests, and root cause analysis for production welding issues. Makes and records observations; performs simple calculations; and collects and prepares welding data for evaluation. Conducts welding laboratory support functions such as stocking and distributing supplies and equipment; arranging and dismantling apparatus and fixtures; and sorting, marking, and storing base materials and filler metals. Performs technical and record keeping duties in conformance with company and regulatory policies and standards to meet quality and accuracy requirements. Performs technical procedures in one or more of the following areas: Production, Research and Development, Quality Control/Assurance, and/or Compliance/Environmental.

Must Have
  • Associate's Degree or other 2 year technical degree in a relevant field and 6 years of relevant experience
  • One of the following may be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree to meet minimum qualifications:
    • NNS Apprentice School graduate
    • Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate
    • High School/GED and 2 years of related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience
    • High School/GED and 4 years of non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

This job requires a high school graduate, or equivalent, with a minimum of 10 years welding related experience.

Nice to Have
  • Proficiency with the following welding processes: GMAW, SMAW, Manual GTAW, Fix-head GTAW, Orbital GTAW familiarity with welding both ferrous (carbon steel, HY, HSLA, etc.) and non-ferrous (CRES, CuNi, NiCu, Inconel, etc.) materials.
  • An NNS Apprentice graduate and experience in the operation of automatic welding processes is preferred.
  • NNS production pipe (nuclear and non-nuclear) welding experience
  • Proficiency prepping, cleaning, fitting weld joints, including the use of burning/heating torches, cutting processes and carbon arc gouging.
  • Knowledge of ship construction methods, welding processes and equipment, and applicable welding and quality procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Level II Visual Inspection (VT) certification.
  • Pay grade 15 or higher welders.
