Job description

Overview

SGS is seeking Welding Inspectors in multiple locations throughout the USA. Work is assigned on an as-needed basis and paid for the hours/days spent on the assigned work. The duration can range from a day to several days or weeks. The inspector will sign an independent contractor/sub-contractor agreement (1099) with SGS North America Inc.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure welds and welding processes comply with codes, standards, specifications, and project requirements by performing visual inspections and witnessing/verifying non-destructive tests and their reports.
  • Monitor welding parameters and inspect materials and equipment.
  • Review quality documents including WPS/PQR, assess quality, and issue reports or recommendations for corrective actions to ensure safety and structural integrity of welded components.
  • Verify welders are qualified and that welding procedures and specifications are followed.
  • Ensure all welding activities adhere to relevant industry codes (ASME, AWS, API) and contractual requirements.
  • Perform pre-weld, in-process, and post-weld inspections to identify defects and ensure quality.
  • Conduct visual inspections of welded joints, checking dimensions, penetration, and bead formation.
  • Witness and interpret/verify non-destructive testing results.
  • Maintain quality of materials, equipment, and safety regulations.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports documenting results and any issues found.
Qualifications
  • Must have at least one of the following: AWS, CWI, CSWIP, or API certification.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of industrial welding-related inspection experience; two (2) years in quality assurance/vendor surveillance/shop inspections.
  • 5–10 years of industry experience (primarily Oil and Gas).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of welding inspections; experience at manufacturer shops/facilities.
  • Experience with pipelines and equipment such as pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pumps is a plus.
  • Willingness to work variable schedules; typical schedule is Monday to Friday with 8–10 hour days; no set schedule and on-call as needed.
  • Hourly rate: $40–$45/hr plus $0.70/km; per diem may be considered for site distances over 200 miles round trip.
  • Independent contractor/sub-contractor agreement (1099) with SGS North America Inc.
