Project Overview
Thacker Pass is the largest known lithium resource in the United States. Once complete, the mine and processing facilities will produce more lithium carbonate than any other facility in the United States by far—enough to power 1 million electric vehicles per year. As the EPCM contractor for Lithium Americas, Bechtel is responsible for managing and integrating the efforts of a team of contractors engineering and building the facility and for procurement of about $1 Billion in goods and services.
Job Summary
Guide, implement, and maintain global construction field welding programs and provide specialized welding engineering support. Manage, inspect, and monitor the welding test lab, rod room, weld heat‑treatment program, and laboratory quality plan to ensure defects and other issues are rectified prior to final inspection.
Major Responsibilities
- Implement and maintain Bechtel Field Welding program; may serve as Lead Field Welding Engineer on large projects.
- Provide specialized welding engineering support for construction to ensure compliance with code, client/engineering specifications, and Bechtel procedures and standards.
- Assist in the management of the pre‑ and post‑weld heat‑treatment program.
- Assist in the management of the rod room and oversee rod room attendants to ensure all weld filler materials meet Bechtel, Code, and Client requirements.
- Schedule and coordinate NDE with construction and subcontractors for the most efficient NDE schedule at least cost and minimal impact to construction.
- Manage and monitor the welding test lab to ensure high‑quality welders are being tested and hired.
- Review and maintain weld documents and uphold the credibility/accountability of the Welding Program.
- Maintain welder qualifications and welder stamps and manage related issues.
- Perform field inspections of welding work and advise on rectification of quality behaviors and defects prior to final inspection.
- May be responsible for implementing and leading subcontractor and direct‑hire Pre/PWHT program.
Education And Experience Requirements
Requires bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) and 8–10 years of relevant experience, or 12–14 years of relevant work experience.
Required Knowledge And Skills
- Minimum 5 years of experience in direct hire welding and NDE on Bechtel projects.
- NDE certificates including VT, PT, and MT.
- Knowledge of AWS, API, NFPA, AWWA, ASTM, ASNT codes, specifications, and standards, and advanced knowledge and/or certifications in SMAW / GTAW / GMAW / FCAW.
- Heavy industrial direct hire construction experience commensurate with the type of work to be undertaken.
- Intermediate understanding of preheat/post‑weld heat treatment of equipment and consumables.
- Knowledge of engineering and construction methods and processes acquired through specialized instruction or practical experience.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate team members effectively and positively in a collaborative environment and to solve problems in high‑pressure situations.
- Experience on an LNG construction site along the U.S. Gulf Coast and strong technical background in LNG welding applications, methods, and NDE.
- Understanding of applicable Bechtel work processes, including Standard Work Process Procedures.
- Advanced knowledge of Piping Design Drawings/Specifications and Teamwork’s/WITS.
- Must be certifiable by written examination to Bechtel’s nondestructive examination requirements as NDE Level II Visual Examination.
- Knowledge of Bechtel’s SWPP 4MP‑T81‑03701 Welding Program, 03708 Pre/Post‑Weld Heat Treatment, and 03705 Welding & NDE Documentation.
- Familiarity with Bechtel Standard Applications (BSAPs) including Unifier, Aconex, DSCS, PTR, Agile, Navisworks, WITs, Teamwork’s, Arc Stryker, Pipe Fighter, and other automation tools used on Bechtel projects.
