Qualifications

  • BS in Engineering/Physical Science from ABET-accredited program (US/Canada/Washington Accord) or MS/PhD.
  • GPA: 3.5 minimum for PhD; GPA acceptable up to 4 years post-graduation; experience may supersede GPA afterward.
  • 5+ years of experience as a welding engineer in fabrication, manufacturing, or operating environment.
  • DOE O 426.2A requirements may apply; eligible for counterindependence evaluations and related prerequisites.

Responsibilities

  • Provide design engineering support for welding, brazing and bonding in documents and specs.
  • Write welding requirements for procurement, evaluate bid/submittals, conduct vendor surveillance for compliance.
  • Review design output and welding data for national codes and company procedures.
  • Perform field activities, on-site welding/brazing/bonding tasks and NDE as needed.
  • Train site personnel on welding requirements, criteria and compliance documents.

What You'll Do

The Welding Engineer will be responsible for providing support to the Division Managed Design Engineering group, existing facilities operations, construction, and maintenance activities. Project support includes participation in designs ranging from scope definition, feasibility and conceptual studies, and preliminary/detailed designs. The Welding Engineer writes welding requirements for procurement documents, welding, brazing, and bonding procedures in compliance with applicable code requirements. The candidate also solves problems in designing and maintaining plant facilities and processes. The candidate will be responsible for training site personnel from engineering, maintenance, and construction on the welding requirements, criteria, and compliance documents applicable for performing work activities.

The Welding Engineer reviews design output documents for welding technical data for compliance with national codes and standards and company approved procedures and policies. The Welding Engineer evaluates bid proposals for technical compliance of welding submittals, reviews vendor submittals, and conducts vendor surveillances to ensure compliance to contractually specified welding requirements.

The Welding Engineer may be assigned field activities supporting on-site organizations, including on-site subcontractors, performing welding, brazing, bonding activities or non-destructive examination activities associated with welding, brazing, or bonding that falls within the scope of the Welding Program Manual. This includes review of on-site work packages involving welding to ensure that design output is complete and correct and has appropriate hold points.

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Physical Science [Chemistry, Physics, or related] from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET. OR MS in Engineering/Physical science. OR PhD in Engineering/Physical science.
  • There is a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement up to 4 years post-graduation at time of offer and confirmed by transcript. Beyond four years from graduation, engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement for hire.
  • 3.5 minimum cumulative GPA for PhD

In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major 2 years job-related, and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative). DOE 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities.   • The candidate must have extensive technical knowledge in respective national consensus codes and standards (AWS D1.1, ASME B31, and ASME Section IX Welding codes are particularly beneficial).
Preferred Job Requirements
  • A trained welding professional with a B.S. degree with Welding Engineering/Welding Engineering Technology concentration from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience working as a welding engineer in a fabrication, manufacturing or operating environment.
  • Experience working as a welding engineer under a NQA-1 quality system.
  • American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector Certification
  • Ability to work in a project team environment.
  • Ability to follow procedures and work within a rigorous work process.
  • Ability to estimate, plan, and track progress for preparation of discipline deliverables
  • Good written and oral communications skills.
