Job description

SDM Co. is seeking a skilled Welder / Shop Tech to handle both welding and mechanical repairs on heavy mining, construction, and diesel equipment. This position requires someone who can lay down high-quality welds and confidently diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Perform FCAW, SMAW, and GTAW welding on heavy equipment and structural components
• Fabricate and repair cracked frames, buckets, booms, and attachments
• Perform line boring and build‑up repairs when required
• Read and interpret blueprints and repair procedures
• Diagnose and repair diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems
• Perform component removal and installation (pumps, cylinders, undercarriage, etc.)
• Conduct preventive maintenance and field repairs as needed
• Troubleshoot system failures and recommend repair solutions
• Complete accurate work orders and service documentation
• Maintain a safe, clean work environment
• Communicate clearly with supervisors and customers
• Own and maintain required personal tools

Qualifications

• Strong mechanical aptitude and problem‑solving skills
• Proficiency in reading schematics and technical drawings
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Welding certifications preferred (FCAW, SMAW, GTAW)
• Commitment to safety and doing the job right the first time
• Lift up to 50 lbs
• Work in shop and field environments
• Stand, kneel, climb, and work in confined spaces
• Tolerate outdoor weather conditions when required
• Experience in heavy equipment welding and mechanical repair
