Job summary

Astec is a global, environmentally focused infrastructure and manufacturing company specializing in asphalt road building and aggregate processing. We are seeking a welder to join our fabrication team, reading blueprints, welding heavy components, and ensuring quality through inspection and grinding.

Under the direction of the Production Supervisor and Weld Lead, you will layout, weld, and fabricate per specifications, while maintaining safety and efficiency in a manufacturing environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; trade school coursework preferred.
  • Experience with heavy equipment fabrication and fitment welding (2+ years).
  • Ability to read weld symbols and use MIG welding safely.

Responsibilities

  • Weld metal components per specifications following the production schedule.
  • Read blueprints prior to starting; inspect metal and welds for quality.
  • Perform grinding to Astec standards and maintain clean work area.
  • Set up welding equipment and ensure correct machine settings.
  • Operate cranes and forklifts safely and use appropriate PPE.

About The Position

Under the direction and supervision of the Production Supervisor and Weld Lead, weld metal components with welding equipment to fit and join, fabricate, and/or repair heavy and large custom mechanical products per specifications and in accordance with the production schedule.

Key Deliverables
  • Adhere to all safety rules and perform work at a quality level
  • Read and understand assigned blueprints prior to starting a project.
  • Participate in process and product development and improvement programs.
  • Accurately inspect metal prior to welding to ensure clean welds.
  • Perform grinding operations that comply with Astec's standards.
  • Support team by providing an efficient layout of the plants equipment to ensure proper welding.
Key Activities & Responsibilities
  • Welders are responsible for the layout of plant equipment for welding to ensure proper welding of metal parts.
  • Welders must be able to safely MIG to include passing of test(s).
  • Must inspect metal prior to welding for smoothness and acceptability and clean welds to presentable state (grinding operations).
  • Inspect welds for quality and proper weld.
  • Perform layouts, cutting and fitting of material
  • Use welding equipment to burn, cut through
  • Keep work area clean and neat.
  • Ensure welding machine settings are appropriate for work to be performed.
  • Must be able to safely use cranes and forklifts.
  • Must be trained in and know PPE requirements for welding including hood and filter shades and arm/body protection.
  • Must be able to read and understand weld symbols.
  • Must select proper rods or wires to perform the welding job.
  • Must maintain welding machines by keeping them clean and changing liners in the welding guns.
  • Other duties may be assigned
  • Follows company policies and procedures at all times.
  • Follows proper safety rules and procedures at all times.
To be successful in this role, your experience and competencies are:
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Trade school or community college course work preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience with heavy equipment Fabrication and fitment welding.
  • Computer experience is desired, particularly the ability to use a mouse.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform all Grinder tasks required.
  • Ability to properly and safely MiG weld required.
  • Ability to read and understand weld symbols required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Manufacturing Environment

Shop manufacturing environment exposures include exposure to moving mechanical parts, machinery, tools and equipment, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, motorized vehicles, welding and machining operations, outside weather conditions and exposure to the risk of electric shock. The employee may occasionally be exposed to varying levels of dirt, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals, very warm and/or very chilly temperatures. The noise level in the shop can be very loud at times consistent with an industrial assembly facility and may require hearing protection. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
