The Manitowoc Company in Belle Chasse, LA is seeking a skilled Welder to join our fabrication team. You will weld parts to blueprint specifications to meet production schedules and quality standards, reporting to the Production Supervisor.

We value safety, precision, and reliability in every weld and encourage teamwork and continuous improvement. Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma or GED, be able to read blueprints and weld symbols, and pass AWS D1.1 certification tests.

Qualifications

  • Requires High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be able to pass AWS D1.1 flat weld test (2G) within 2 weeks of training.
  • Familiarity with welding methods, equipment, setup and operation.
  • Ability to read and interpret welding drawings; use measuring devices.
  • Maintain welding quality and safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Identify parts and materials.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and weld symbols.
  • Set up and operate welding equipment.
  • Preheat/post-heat parts per procedures.
  • Inspect welds for cosmetic and structural quality.
  • Operate overhead cranes and related tooling.
  • Maintain 5S and shop housekeeping.

Reporting directly to the Production Supervisor, this position is based in Belle Chasse, LA

Essential Job Functions
  • Ability to identify parts and materials
  • Use process and set up sheets
  • Complete and maintain required paperwork
  • Ability to Read and Interpret Blueprints / Machine Drawings / Weld Symbols
  • Ability to read standard measuring devices to the nearest .0312 (1/32\")
  • Understand basic geometric dimensioning & tolerances
  • Visual weld inspection to identify good and bad welds
  • Perform basic shop math
  • Read and use a standard and metric conversion chartSet up and use standard fixturing
  • Demonstrate the ability to safely operate overhead cranes and jib hoists
  • Operate small hand and power tools
  • Able to read Jaeger #2 type vision lettering at 12\"
  • Able to pass pulmonary function test where required
  • Safely operate gas heating and burning equipment
  • Preheat / Post heat parts per procedures using temperature sticks
  • Demonstrate cosmetic acceptability in all welds
Job Requirements/Working Conditions
  • High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.
  • Must be able to successfully pass AWS D1.1 in the flat weld position - 2G - Grove test #20 within 2 weeks of training.
  • Maintain certification by using the process at least once in a six-month period.
  • Familiarity with welding methods and techniques, equipment, set up and operation.
  • Familiarity with assembly and fabrication practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret routine welding and fabrication drawings; use and interpret measuring devices such as rule, scale, square, protractor; ability to use and understand fractional, decimal and metric measuring methods.
  • Other duties as determined by supervision.
  • Maintain departmental housekeeping and 5S standards.
  • Perform job functions in a safe manner.
  • Wear all Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E.) required by Company Policy for the job being performed.
  • Know and follow established job specific and facility wide safety and health procedures and rules.
  • Actively participate in safety and health training and demonstrate competency based on training received.
  • Bring safety and health issues, unsafe acts, and safety suggestions to management’s attention or correct those you can.
  • Eye examination prior to being assigned to a welding position and periodic eye exams every three (3) years thereafter while in a welding position as part of the maintenance of qualification to perform welding. Minimum acceptable vision requirements are near-distance acuity in at least one eye such that the individual is capable of reading a minimum of Jaeger Number 2 or equivalent type and size letter at a distance of not less than 12 inches on a standard Jaeger test chart.
  • Specific vision abilities include color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
