Job summary

M.C. Dean is hiring a Welder Helper at the Modular Mission Critical campus near Richmond, VA. You will support production by preparing materials, staging parts, and assisting with basic welding under supervision.

Responsibilities include reading weld symbols, setting up equipment, and maintaining safety practices, PPE, and housekeeping. Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED and complete required safety training.

  • Set up leads, clamps, gas, wire or electrode, and basic machine readiness as shown.
  • Perform basic beads, tacks, weld segments, cutting, grinding, and finishing following the sequence.
  • Check for obvious fit-up or weld issues, document defects, and avoid undocumented rework.
  • Follow PPE, hot-work, ventilation, and housekeeping controls; communicate blockers for review.

The Welder Helper supports routine welding and fabrication work under direct guidance in production, construction, or industrial environments. Prepares materials and work areas, assists with fit-up and equipment setup, completes basic welding and finishing tasks as assigned, and presents work for review.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and stage parts, materials, work areas, tools, consumables, and equipment according to work instructions.
  • Locate the correct work order, drawing, traveler, part identification, and material callout; read basic dimensions, orientation marks, and weld symbols with guidance.
  • Measure, mark, clean, grind, cut, clamp, fit, and tack simple components under the direction of an experienced welder or supervisor.
  • Set up leads, work clamps, gas, wire or electrode, and basic machine readiness as shown; request direction before changing the approved setup.
  • Perform basic beads, tacks, weld segments, cutting, grinding, and finishing while following the assigned sequence and demonstrated technique.
  • Check work for obvious fit-up or weld concerns, complete required cleanup, and report defects or mismatches instead of making undocumented rework.
  • Follow PPE, hot-work, ventilation, fire-prevention, material-handling, and housekeeping controls; maintain tools and communicate blockers or readiness for review.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED and 0+ years of related experience.
  • Must complete required M.C. Dean safety, hot-work, equipment, tool, material-handling, and work-instruction training for assigned work.
Abilities:
  • The position requires the ability to lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. Candidates must demonstrate physical strength and stamina to perform various tasks, including but not limited to, loading, and unloading, operating equipment, and assisting in the transportation of various materials. Proper lifting techniques and safety protocols must be followed to ensure personal and team safety.
  • Relocates a 12 foot stepladder without assistance.
  • Works at various heights up to 60 feet and can climb and maintain balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks and all types of ladders.
  • Walks, climbs, lifts, squats, crawls, kneels, pushes, pulls and reaches overhead on a routine and repetitive basis.
  • Possess good vision (may be corrected vision), the ability to see in color, and the ability to hear and communicate in English.
  • May use a standard ladder without exceeding the weight limit while carrying tools.
  • Tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
  • Apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
  • Combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (including finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events).
  • See details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
  • Listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
