Job summary

J&J Truck Bodies & Trailers in Cumberland, MD is seeking experienced welders to set up and operate equipment for welding carbon steel and aluminum fabrications, including truck bodies, trailers and subassemblies.

You will follow PPE requirements and ISO 9001 standards, prepare surfaces, clamp parts, and weld using GMAW and FCAW, while inspecting bead size and maintaining equipment.

This hands-on shop role emphasizes safety, quality, and reliability in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Qualifications

  • Vocational/technical training needed or a high school diploma or general education degree with work experience in an industrial setting.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate welding equipment while wearing required PPE.
  • Follow ISO 9001 QMS provisions and quality standards.
  • Set up and adjust welder amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse per training or foreman.
  • Start the power supply to produce an electric current.
  • Clean or degrease weld joints or workpieces.
  • Prepare objects for welding by grinding surfaces.
  • Position and clamp work pieces together or in a jig or fixture; fit up simple assemblies.
  • Preheat the workpiece if/when required.
  • Strike arc to melt and deposit metal from electrode to workpiece and join edges.
  • Guide welding gun along weld line, maintaining arc length and bead.
  • Inspect welds for bead size and specifications.
  • Chip off excess weld, slag, and spatter.
  • Set up and adjust welder, perform routine maintenance such as replacing wire spools and changing liners.
  • Safely operate lifting devices such as overhead/jib cranes and forklifts when trained.

Job description

J&J Truck Bodies & Trailers is looking for experienced welders for our Cumberland, MD shop who set up and operate equipment to weld together fabricated metal components of products such as truck bodies, trailers, specialty vehicles, and related subassemblies; and custom fabrications made of carbon steel and aluminum using the GMAW and FCAW process.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Safely perform duties, always wearing the required PPE
  • Observes and complies with all provisions of the ISO 9001 QMS
  • Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse, as specified by training, or by foreman.
  • Starts the power supply to produce an electric current.
  • Cleans or degreases weld joints or workpieces.
  • Prepares objects for welding by grinding surfaces.
  • Positions and clamps work pieces together or assemble them in a jig or fixture. Fit up simple assemblies
  • Preheat the workpiece if/when required.
  • Strikes (forms) arc to melt and deposit metal from electrode to workpiece and join edges of the workpiece.
  • Manually guides gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead.
  • Examines weld for bead size and other specifications.
  • Chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter.
  • Set up and adjust welder, and perform routine maintenance such as replacing spools of wire & changing out liners.
  • Safely operate all lifting devices such as overhead & jib cranes and fork trucks when authorized & adequately trained.

  • Vocational/technical training needed or a high school diploma or general education degree with work experience in an industrial setting.
