Job summary

Sabre Industries, Inc. is seeking a Welder B to perform production welding on pole assemblies in a dynamic manufacturing environment in Louisiana. You will interpret drawings, set up welding equipment, and weld per approved procedures.

Applicants must have AWS MIG certification and Welder C certification and be able to operate oxy-fuel and plasma-arc torches, with a strong emphasis on safety and quality control on an active shop floor.

Qualifications

Scope Of Responsibility

While working under the direct supervision of the Production Supervisor and the assigned lead person, the Welder B performs production within prescribed codes and according to prescribed procedures, specifications, and drawings.

Essential Duties

• Manually position pole assembly in pole rollers into proper position for welding.
• Read and interpret drawings (including weld symbols) and specifications to determine proper location of attachments, as well as weld size and configuration.
• Add, subtract, multiply, and divide feet, inches, fractions, and decimals. Use tables to convert fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions.
• Adjust welding machines to achieve desired results within parameters of established welding procedures. Frequently push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds.
• Use oxy‑fuel torch to pre‑heat parts to be welded in accordance with published welding codes and specifications.
• Use GMAC or FCAW welding process to weld small components or assemblies in 1G and 2F positions.
• Understand company‑specific welding procedures.
• Perform tack welds and/or finish welds to required production levels.
• Wear protective equipment, including safety glasses, insulated welding gloves, leather sleeves and/or cape and welding hood.
• Work in confined areas at various locations on the small pole assembly line as necessary to weld components described above.
• Use chipping hammer, wire brush, motorized grinders, and motorized wire brush at various times to clean welded areas.
• Use pneumatic drills and magnetic drills to drill various sized holes on pole assembly as required by drawings and specifications.
• Visually inspect work to identify material discrepancies and ensure welds have been completed satisfactorily in compliance with applicable drawings and specifications.
• Use overhead cranes to transport and move material. Overhead crane training will be required.
• Use a weld gauge to measure weld size, standard and metric.
• Read and interpret work orders and daily production schedules.
• Correct labor reporting in MES system to ensure operations are complete.
• Assist fitter in assembling pole assembly when needed. Use measuring tape, level, square and angle finder to measure distances and angles.
• Use oxy‑fuel cutting torch and plasma‑arc torch for cutting steel.
• Operate assembly line cart system to move tubular shafts into position for cutting on band saw and for fitting. Operate band saw for cutting tubular shafts according to specifications.
• Maintain a clean work area.
• Properly weld and assemble poles according to the specified welding process.
• Produce quality work in a timely manner.
• Work safely according to OSHA standards, including wearing the proper PPE to accomplish tasks.

Position Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
• AWS Certification required for specific welding operations.
• Must have passed Welder C certification and be AWS certified in MIG welding to meet MT and UT inspection quality assurance.
• Basic shop mathematical aptitude and ability to thrive in a deadline‑driven environment.
• Proficient in reading complex prints and specifications.
• Verbally communicate in English language.
• Must possess adequate dexterity and stamina to sustain expected production effectively.
• Knowledge and awareness of the safety issues related to each operation performed within the department.
• Required PPE includes safety glasses, steel‑toe metatarsal boots and hearing protection worn at all times on the production floor in addition to other specific PPE that must be worn for specific tasks.
• Production floor environment may include fluctuations in temperature.
• Must be able to stand 100% of scheduled shift and use foot pedal to operate equipment.
• Lifting, pushing, prying, and dragging heavy materials up to 50 pounds.
• Must be capable of reaching, grasping, bending, stooping, crawling under or over, and occasional climbing.
• Abnormal level of noise due to grinding, chipping, hammering requires hearing protection (ear plugs) be worn at all times.

Physical Requirement

• Must be able to stand 100% of scheduled shift.
• Must be able to lift, push, pry, and drag heavy materials.
• Capable of bending, stooping, crawling under or over, and occasional climbing of stairs/ladders up to 6 or 7 feet.
• Abnormal level of noise due to grinding, chipping, hammering requires hearing protection (ear plugs) be worn at all times.
• Must possess adequate dexterity and stamina to sustain expected production effectively.
• Must be able to work in a fast‑paced work environment.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving entire body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, bending, twisting and handling of materials.
• Position requires manual dexterity, arm‑hand steadiness and a safety‑minded individual.
• Must be able to work in an open environment exposed to extreme temperatures.
