Job summary

Upchurch is seeking a skilled welder to join our team at Widows Creek Station, AL. You will perform carbon steel welding across mechanical and HVAC piping systems, reading blueprints and symbols to ensure accurate welds in an industrial environment.

Qualifications

• 1–3 years of welding experience in a commercial or industrial setting.
• Ability to perform quality welds on carbon steel (TIG, Stick, or MIG).
• Familiarity with pipe welding and structural welding fundamentals.
• Ability to read basic welding symbols and follow layouts.
• Physically able to lift 50 lbs and work in confined spaces.

Responsibilities

• Weld pipe and structural components using SMAW, FCAW or GMAW as required.
• Follow instructions from supervisors and adhere to blueprints.
• Set up and operate welding equipment and tools properly.
• Assist with pipe preparation including grinding, beveling, and cleaning.
• Perform tack welds and minor fitting as directed.
• Conduct basic visual weld inspections and adjustments as needed.
• Adhere to safety guidelines and wear PPE at all times.
• Maintain a clean, organized work area.
• Support other trades when welding tasks are not active.

Key Responsibilities

• Weld pipe and structural components using designated processes such as SMAW (Stick), FCAW (Flux Core), or GMAW (MIG), depending on project needs.
• Follow instructions from supervisors and adhere to job specifications and blueprints.
• Set up and operate welding equipment and tools properly.
• Assist with pipe preparation including grinding, beveling, and cleaning surfaces.
• Perform tack welds and minor fitting as directed.
• Conduct basic visual weld inspections and make necessary adjustments.
• Adhere to all safety guidelines and wear proper PPE at all times.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
• Support other trades (pipefitters, helpers) when welding tasks are not active.
• Participate in toolbox talks and ongoing safety meetings.

Required Skills/Abilities

• 1-3 years of welding experience in a commercial or industrial setting.
• Ability to perform quality welds on carbon steel (TIG, Stick, or MIG depending on need).
• Familiarity with pipe welding and structural welding fundamentals.
• Ability to read basic welding symbols and follow layout instructions.
• Physically able to lift 50 lbs, bend, kneel, and work in confined or elevated areas.
• Willingness to take and pass weld tests as required.
• OSHA 10 certification preferred.
• Previous experience in mechanical or HVAC piping systems.
• Exposure to stainless steel welding (TIG) a plus.
• Basic knowledge of fitting, layout, or rigging.
