Job summary

GENERAL REFRIGERATION COMPANY is seeking a Welder in Delmar, DE to perform precision welding, pipe fabrication, and related finishing operations for industrial refrigeration systems. You will read drawings, set up welding equipment, and ensure weld quality per specifications.

The role requires passing two 6G weld tests within 30 days, plus 2 years of pipe welding experience and safety compliance. Travel to eastern US sites and weekend work may be required.

Qualifications

  • Must pass two (2) 6G Weld tests within the first thirty days of employment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and drawings to determine project requirements and specifications.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ industrial pipe welding experience is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all necessary weld preparation operations, including cleaning, cutting, beveling, fitting, and aligning piping and other components to ensure proper fit-up for welding.
  • Set up and calibrate welding machines and tools, including adjusting settings for different welding processes and materials.
  • Execute various welding operations (stick, TIG, MIG, etc.) to fabricate and repair components of industrial refrigeration systems according to detailed specifications, blueprints, sketches, or other forms of instruction. This includes welding beveled pipe.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues related to welding defects, equipment malfunctions, or material inconsistencies and implement corrective actions.
  • Adjust welding techniques and settings based on material type, thickness, and joint configuration to ensure proper penetration and fusion.
  • Inspect completed welds for quality, consistency, and adherence to specifications using visual inspection and testing methods.
  • Complete all necessary post-weld finishing operations, including cleaning, grinding, and inspecting welds to ensure they meet or exceed specified quality standards and code compliance.
  • Maintain records of welding procedures, materials used, and inspections performed, often for quality control and compliance purposes.
  • Perform routine maintenance on welding equipment and tools, including cleaning, and minor repairs to ensure optimal performance.
  • Safely perform load rigging and material handling operations using appropriate tools and equipment. Utilize overhead cranes and forklifts safely and efficiently.
  • Follow and enforce strict safety regulations such as wearing required PPE and completing periodic safety evaluations, as required.
  • Perform other job-related tasks and duties as assigned by your Superintendent, Foreman, or other member of management, including assisting with other aspects of the project.

Qualifications and Required Experience
  • Must pass two (2) 6G Weld tests within the first thirty days of employment:
    • 5\" schedule 80 carbon steel pipe (stick welding – 6010 root, 7018 cap)
    • 2\" schedule 80 stainless steel pipe (TIG welding, TIG root, TIG cap)
    • 2\" schedule 80 carbon steel to schedule 80 stainless steel (TIG welding, TIG root, TIG cap)
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and drawings to determine project requirements and specifications.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ industrial pipe welding experience is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic power tools and hand tools (grinders, cutting torches, etc.).
  • Experience operating industrial lifts (forklifts, overhead cranes, etc.).
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures, above 100°F and below 10°F, and be able to wear all required safety PPE in these conditions.
  • Knowledge of relative safety standards and willingness to use protective clothing.
  • Preferred candidates will have experience with either ammonia refrigeration pipe, steam or gas lines, or process pipe welding.
  • Availability to travel overnight to project and service sites in the eastern United States as needed. Weekend availability is required.
  • Employee must possess a valid driver’s license and be capable of driving for up to 10 hours.
  • Position requires pre‑employment drug screening, criminal background screening, and driving record check.
Physical Requirements
  • The ability to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including electronic and diagnostic tools, recovery equipment, and various other equipment.
  • The ability to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials up to 50 pounds (23 kg) and occasionally lift up to 75 pounds (34 kg).
  • This position requires: stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, seeing, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to work at heights and climb ladders for extended periods of time.
