Job summary

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; trade schooling preferred.
  • TWIC credential required or obtainable before employment.
  • OSHA 30-hour certification required or obtained within onboarding timeline.
  • HAZWOPER certification required or obtainable within company timeframe.
  • FDNY Certificate of Fitness for Firewatch and Flammable Gases/Hot Work required or obtainable.

Responsibilities

  • Perform welding and fabrication on steel, aluminum and other metals used in marine construction and equipment repair.
  • Execute welds in flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead positions.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings and welding specifications.
  • Conduct pre- and post-weld inspections to ensure weld quality.
  • Use cutting torches, grinders and other metalworking tools safely and effectively.
  • Maintain proper care, calibration and storage of welding tools and equipment.
  • Understand and apply crane hand signals when assisting with lifting and positioning.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure safe and efficient workflow.
  • Follow strict safety guidelines, including hot work permits and Firewatch protocols.
  • Assist in material preparation, assembly and site cleanup as needed.
  • Report hazards, defects, or safety concerns promptly to supervisors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform welding and fabrication on steel, aluminum, and other metals used in marine construction and equipment repair.
  • Execute welds in multiple positions, including flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and welding specifications.
  • Conduct pre- and post-weld inspections to ensure weld quality and adherence to standards.
  • Use cutting torches, grinders, and other metalworking tools safely and effectively.
  • Maintain proper care, calibration, and storage of welding tools and equipment.
  • Understand and apply standard crane hand signals when assisting with lifting and positioning materials.

Minimum Requirements / Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Certified welders are qualified for a variety of welding positions.
  • A TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) is required or obtainable before employment.
  • 30-Hour OSHA Certification and Current HAZWOPER Certificate required (or must be obtained within a company-approved timeline).
  • FDNY Certificate of Fitness for Firewatch and Flammable Gases/Hot Work required or ability to obtain within company timeframe.
  • Ability to swim and work safely over water.
  • Must pass respirator physical fitness test and wear respirator when conditions dictate.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical and drug screening (safety-sensitive position).
  • Previous marine construction or heavy industrial welding experience strongly preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods, including floating vessels and uneven surfaces.
  • Frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, and working in tight or awkward spaces.
  • Ability to climb ladders and move safely between vessels and between vessels and docks or land.
  • Required to wear PPE, including respirators and Type III PFDs, throughout the shift, which increases physical strain in hot weather conditions.
  • Regular exposure to extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, wind, and rain.
  • Potential exposure to coal tars, PCBs, lead, and other contaminants in Gowanus Canal soil and water.
Work Environment
  • Work performed in outdoor marine construction environments and on floating work platforms.
  • Exposure to loud noise, welding fumes, sparks, and hazardous materials.
  • Close coordination with construction crews, rigging teams, and vessel operators.
  • Work around heavy machinery and active construction operations in all weather conditions.
Compensation
  • Salary range: $25 to $42
