Job summary

KingRecruitingServices seeks a Weld Engineer in Spring Grove, IL to develop and sustain welding and additive manufacturing programs, including AWS/ASME standards. The role combines hands-on shop support with process qualification oversight and collaboration with QA, NDT, and materials lab teams.

You will write procedures, mentor staff, and drive continuous improvement in weld technology and manufacturing practices, aligning with customer specifications and industry standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Weld Engineering or related field; strong industry experience considered.
• 1–3 years’ experience as a weld engineer or in additive manufacturing research.
• Experience building and maintaining a certified weld program.
• Ability to interpret industry and customer specifications.

Responsibilities

• Develop and own the welding program (AWS, ASME, and others) and support certification enhancements.
• Provide on-the-floor support to welders and engineering team in welding/additive processes.
• Work with NDT to develop and sustain weld inspection program.
• Write and ensure execution of welding and additive manufacturing procedures.
• Develop customer-facing work procedures for new/repaired products.
• Review welder qualification samples with the materials lab to ensure quality.
• Interpret industry/customer specs and communicate requirements.
• Teach welding concepts to office and shop staff.
• Troubleshoot problems using a scientific approach to drive quality.
• Disposition of welding quality rejections and lead corrective actions.
• R&D on process improvement and new product development with cross-functional teams.
• Serve as technology SME in welding and additive manufacturing.
• Failure analysis of forged/welded parts and corrective actions.
• Supplier qualification and industry representation as needed.

Location: Spring Grove, IL

Position Summary

The weld engineer will develop and sustain a welding and/or wire direct energy deposition additive process. Responsible for technology, people, and process qualifications, this role will require a hand-on shop support component with a strong capability of problem solving. He/she will be accountable for 3 party program accreditation and well as monitoring and advancing technology.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop and own the welding program (AWS, ASME and others).Collaborate with quality as to the system enhancements required for certification.
• Provide on-the-floor support to welders and other engineering team members in the executing of welding and/or other additive processes and products.
• Work closely with the non-destructive testing team in the development and sustainment of a weld inspection program
• Develop, write, and ensure effective execution of manufacturing procedures including welding and additive manufacturing procedures.
• Develop and submit customer facing work procedures for new and repaired products.
• Working closely with the materials lab, review process and welder qualification samples, adjusting practices and/or coaching to ensure sustainable quality performance.
• Interpret industry and customer specifications and communicate requirements
• Teaching office and shop employees welding concepts and practices
• Troubleshooting and problem solving utilizing a scientific approach
• Provide technical disposition of welding quality rejections and own the corrective action of system failures.
• Research and development projects for process improvement and product development. Work closely with cross functional team (Sales, Forge, Forge Development Team, Heat Treat, Vendors, etc.) to develop new customers, product types and/or market segments
• Through industry research, serve as a technology subject matter expert in welding and additive manufacturing.
• Failure analysis and disposition of internally and externally rejected forgings/welds
• Implementation of necessary corrective actions
• When appropriate, provide supplier qualification and oversight.
• Represent company in industry organizations as requested (e.g., AWS, ASME, ASNT)
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education/Experience

• Bachelor of Science Degree in Weld Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or Material Science (emphasis on weld processes) desired but will consider candidates with comparable industry experience.
• Minimum 1-3 years’ experience as a weld engineer or applicable additive manufacturing research.

Required Skills

• Experience in building and maintaining a certified weld program.
• Intermediate understanding of physical metallurgy principles as they relate to welding, metal working and heat treatment applications.
• Excellent listening and communication skills.
• Technical skills include: Weld Engineering, Physical Metallurgy, Heat treatment Principles, Mechanical Testing, Microstructural Interpretation, Failure Analysis, NDE, Industry and Customer Specifications.
