Position Overview

Weight Test and Rigging Support Technician at Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) Product Family in San Diego, CA. Responsibilities include rigging and periodic weight testing certification services for in‑shop components and U.S. Navy ships weight handling systems.

Responsibilities

• Provide rigging and periodic weight testing certification services for in‑shop components and onboard weight handling systems.
• Provide shipboard equipment rigging services for U.S. Navy vessels.
• Provide component rigging services as requested in SWRMC assist work center requests.
• Provide guidance on U.S. Navy vessel weight handling systems and components.
• Conduct ship‑checks to determine scope of work and correct material selection in accordance with applicable NAVSEA drawings and other technical reference documents.
• Provide Journeyman‑level support to accomplish task requirements.
• Utilize shop equipment such as 200K pull‑test machine, 10K CAT 3 non‑cab overhead crane, hydraulic swaging machine, hydraulic cable cutter, zinc melting pot, various size chain hoists, beam clamps, dynamometer, rigging equipment, and portable electrical, pneumatic, and hand tools.

Qualifications

• High school education, trade school, or equivalent with 6 years of related experience.
• Must provide own hand tools designated per trades specialty.
• Complete riggers’ qualification per NAVFAC Publication 307 (P‑307) and U.S. Navy 40‑Hour Rigger course within 60 calendar days of providing support.
• Obtain and maintain Category 3 Crane Operator qualification per NAVFAC Publication 307 within 60 calendar days of providing support; ability to operate Category 3 cranes.
• Obtain and maintain the following qualifications within 60 calendar days of providing support, when required by specific area of support:
  • Zinc Socket Pourer per NSTM Chapter 613, S9086‑UU‑STM‑010.
  • Swage Press Operator per NSTM Chapter 613, S9086‑UU‑STM‑010.
  • OHSA 10 course, CPR, Fall Protection, low speed vehicle training for operation of carts, and PQS 301 Craftsman qualification within 90 days.
  • Forklift license if required.
  • Maintain CAC/DBIDS ID Base access and DoD Security Clearance.
• Start date contingent upon approval of base access and continued employment.

Bonus Points

Physical Requirements

• Lift, carry, and transport heavy equipment and boxes (not less than 30 lbs).
• Work on and climb ladders; conduct work in extreme temperatures, aboard ships, shipyards, industrial conditions, and confined spaces.
• Perform tasks involving high heat, humidity, noise, dirty conditions, working aloft or over sides of vessels.
• May require wearing a respirator.
