Job summary

PAWS Chicago seeks a Weekend Shelter Medicine Veterinarian to provide comprehensive medical care for shelter and foster animals on Saturdays and/or Sundays at the Medical Center. The role blends emergency, internal, and infectious disease care in a fast-paced setting.

You will diagnose, treat, stabilize patients, perform minor procedures, manage infectious disease, and coordinate complex cases with the surgical team, helping animals reach adoptable health.

Qualifications

• DVM or equivalent required.
• Current Illinois veterinary license or ability to obtain licensure.
• Minimum one year of shelter medicine experience or equivalent experience in emergency, general practice, or high-volume clinical medicine.
• Availability to work Saturdays, Sundays, or both.
• Excellent diagnostic, clinical reasoning, and medical decision-making skills.
• Ability to thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment while maintaining exceptional standards of patient care.
• Passion for animal welfare and the No Kill movement.
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to multidisciplinary care.

Responsibilities

• Deliver comprehensive physical examinations for shelter and foster animals.
• Diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions, from routine illnesses to complex and critically ill patients.
• Provide emergency assessment, stabilization, and intensive medical care as needed.
• Manage infectious diseases (e.g., canine parvovirus, feline panleukopenia) and other shelter conditions.
• Monitor hospitalized patients and adjust treatment plans based on response.
• Administer vaccines and preventive care per shelter protocols.
• Perform minor surgical and sedated procedures and coordinate advanced surgical cases.
• Participate in daily medical rounds with veterinary staff.
• Apply evidence-based shelter medicine to protect individual and population health.
• Contribute to ongoing improvement of medical protocols.
