Web Software Developer (MicrobeTrace – Full-Stack)

The Web Software Developer (MicrobeTrace – Full-Stack) supports the CDC National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and Tuberculosis Prevention (NCHHSTP) by designing, developing, enhancing, and maintaining the MicrobeTrace web application and related public‑facing and internal informatics tools. This role delivers secure, scalable, and user‑centered web solutions that support pathogen genomics, molecular epidemiology, and public health data visualization.

The developer works collaboratively with CDC scientists, epidemiologists, bioinformaticians, and informatics teams to ensure MicrobeTrace and related applications are reliable, accessible, and compliant with CDC IT governance, security, and accessibility standards.

Key Responsibilities

Integration & Performance Optimization

  • Integrate front‑end components with back‑end services and data sources.
  • Optimize application performance, scalability, and reliability across environments.
  • Support troubleshooting, defect resolution, and continuous improvement activities.

Security, Governance & Compliance

  • Ensure applications comply with CDC IT security, privacy, and data protection requirements.
  • Support CDC EPLC documentation, reviews, and approvals as required.
  • Implement and maintain Section 508 / WCAG accessibility compliance for all web interfaces.
  • Apply secure coding practices and support vulnerability remediation.

DevOps & Operational Support

  • Support deployment, configuration, and maintenance of web applications in Azure‑hosted environments.
  • Assist with version control, release management, and environment coordination.
  • Participate in incident response, root‑cause analysis, and operational support activities.
  • Work closely with CDC program staff, informatics leadership, and technical teams to ensure solutions align with mission needs.
  • Prepare technical documentation, design artifacts, and user guidance.
  • Support demonstrations, stakeholder briefings, and knowledge transfer activities.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of web application development experience, including full‑stack development.
  • Experience deploying and supporting applications on Apache Tomcat and Apache HTTP Server.
  • Experience working in cloud environments (Azure preferred).
  • Knowledge of secure coding practices and web application security fundamentals.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting MicrobeTrace, public health, or bioinformatics‑related applications.
  • Experience supporting CDC, HHS, NIH, FDA, or other federal public health programs.
  • Familiarity with public health data visualization or analytics tools.
  • Experience with accessibility standards (Section 508 / WCAG).
  • Cloud‑based application deployment and support.
  • Secure and accessible web design.
  • Performance optimization and troubleshooting.
  • Collaboration with scientific and public health stakeholders.
