Job summary

American Family Insurance offers a department/division internship focused on establishing and maintaining strategies to meet organizational objectives. Under supervision, you will work on projects supporting business area goals, collaborating to provide apps meeting business needs with front end (Angular/React) and API (Express/NestJS) tech.

You will work in a hybrid role, with a minimum of 10 days per month from the Madison, WI office, and must reside within 50 miles of the location.

Job description

As a department or division intern the role will assist in establishing and maintaining strategies to meet organizational objectives. Under the direction of a senior level employee or manager the individual will work on projects that support the business area goals and results. Completes tasks using both interpersonal and technical skills appropriate to the specific job assignment, while adapting to new or changing situations in a team environment. Collaborates with others to provide and maintain applications that meet business needs. Responsible for design and development of business solutions using front end technologies like Angular or React and API technologies like Express or NestJS.

Primary Accountabilities

• Works with Senior Engineer to design and develop solutions to the level of quality defined by the requirements in adherence with standards, methodology and internal controls.
• Understands and identifies system dependencies.
• Understands functionality, integration points and impacts of proposed changes to supporting applications. Follows through with options and recommendations.
• Provides appropriate documentation for design decisions, estimating assumptions, code modules, and performance metrics as required by organization standards.
• Defines, conducts, and/or participates in testing (i.e. unit, system integration).
• Collaborates with others too understand effectiveness of systems flow, data usage and manual or automated processes to verify requirements.
• Works with Senior Engineer to ensure software development meets standards for programming, design, performance, quality, and security.
• Participates in team activities and taking on additional work tasks as needed to help the team accomplish the desired outcome or goals.
• Creates, maintains, and/or enhances system documentation as needed.

Specialized Knowledge & Skills Requirements

• Familiarity with customer-driven solutions, support or service
• Basic knowledge and understanding of integration and migration strategies and technologies.
• Basic knowledge and understanding of application architecture, design alternatives, and development standards. Some familiarity with software/systems using one or more programming language is desirable.
• Familiarity or experience interpreting, modifying and writing application system design and program specifications.
• Experience using and supporting integration and communications technologies between applications, databases and technology platforms.
• Good knowledge and understanding of systems development life cycle (SDLC).
• Familiarity with front end technologies like Angular or React and API technologies like Express or NestJS.
• Familiarity with code repositories, CI/CD pipelines and cloud technologies (GCP or AWS)
• Conceptual understanding of APIs and API Gateway
• Knowledge and understanding of activities, tasks, tools and techniques for testing applications to ensure adherence to functional and quality requirements.
