Job Summary

TYLin is seeking a Wayfinding Specialist to support the planning and design of wayfinding systems for complex infrastructure and transportation projects in the New York and New Jersey region. This role is ideally suited to an experienced Architect or Planner with a strong background in wayfinding strategy, environmental graphic design, and the integration of signage and passenger information systems into the built environment. The successful candidate will bring a strong understanding of how people navigate complex spaces, translating user needs, operational requirements, and architectural intent into intuitive, accessible, and cohesive wayfinding solutions. Experience working on transportation infrastructure, particularly transit stations, airports, rail facilities, or other public-facing transportation environments, is highly desirable. Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams, clients, and stakeholders, the Wayfinding Specialist will help shape the passenger and user experience across projects from early planning and concept development through detailed design and implementation.

Key Responsibilities

Lead wayfinding strategy and planning: Develop wayfinding strategies, navigation concepts, and signage frameworks for complex buildings, public spaces, and transportation infrastructure. Drive design excellence: Lead the development of wayfinding concepts, sign families, signage layouts, environmental graphics, and related design documentation. Integrate with the built environment: Coordinate wayfinding systems with architectural design, interior environments, site planning, circulation, and passenger flow. Enhance the user experience: Apply user-centered design principles to create intuitive, legible, and consistent navigation experiences for diverse users, including people with disabilities and those unfamiliar with the environment. Collaborate across disciplines: Work closely with architects, planners, engineers, transportation specialists, and other technical disciplines to ensure wayfinding solutions are integrated into the overall project design. Engage clients and stakeholders: Facilitate workshops, present design concepts, communicate recommendations, and incorporate stakeholder feedback into project deliverables. Oversee technical deliverables: Guide the preparation and review of wayfinding plans, signage schedules, design guidelines, specifications, and related documentation. Support project delivery: Coordinate with project managers and technical teams to manage design milestones, address project constraints, and support successful implementation. Promote consistency and accessibility: Ensure designs align with applicable accessibility requirements, relevant codes and standards, client criteria, and project-specific guidelines.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or higher in Architecture, Urban Planning, Environmental Design, Graphic Design, or a related discipline. Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience, with a strong emphasis on wayfinding planning and design. Demonstrated experience developing wayfinding strategies and signage systems for complex built environments. Experience on transportation or transit infrastructure projects, such as rail stations, transit hubs, airports, terminals, or other public transportation facilities, is strongly preferred. Strong understanding of pedestrian circulation, passenger journeys, spatial orientation, signage hierarchies, and information design. Experience integrating wayfinding into architectural, planning, and multidisciplinary infrastructure projects. Ability to interpret client requirements and translate complex operational and spatial needs into clear, practical design solutions. Strong communication, presentation, coordination, and stakeholder engagement skills. Proficiency in relevant design and documentation tools, such as Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, Revit, or comparable software. Ability to manage multiple priorities and contribute effectively within multidisciplinary project teams. Familiarity with accessibility standards, inclusive design principles, and applicable signage requirements. Professional registration or relevant design credentials are an asset, but not essential where equivalent experience can be demonstrated.

What You'll Bring

You are a thoughtful and creative design professional who understands that effective wayfinding is about more than signage. It is about helping people navigate spaces confidently, safely, and independently. You combine design sensibility with practical problem-solving, understand the relationship between the built environment and the user experience, and can bring clarity to complex transportation environments. You are comfortable leading design discussions, collaborating across disciplines, and building consensus among clients and project stakeholders. You are curious, proactive, and motivated by the opportunity to influence how people experience the infrastructure that connects their communities.

Why Join TYLin?

At TYLin, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to meaningful infrastructure projects while working alongside talented professionals across architecture, planning, engineering, and transportation.
