Job summary

Precision Castparts Corp. is seeking a Wax Injection Operator in Groton, CT. You will operate wax injection equipment to produce patterns and components used in investment casting, and you will set up dies and adjust parameters to meet quality standards.

Qualifications

PURPOSE

Under general supervision, operates manual, automatic, and semi-automatic wax injection equipment to produce the full range of wax patterns, components, and assemblies used in the investment casting process.

Performs die setup, assembly, injection, inspection, repair, and finishing activities while ensuring compliance with established quality, safety, and production standards. Responsible for producing acceptable wax patterns using standard and complex dies, preparing ceramic cores for production use, and supporting continuous improvement through quality inspection, troubleshooting, training, and process optimization.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Operate manual, automatic, and semi-automatic wax injection equipment to produce wax patterns and components used in the investment casting process
  • Assemble, set up, position, and disassemble standard and complex multi-section dies using established procedures and work instructions
  • Apply release agents, select appropriate process parameters, and adjust injection pressure, temperature, dwell time, and other variables within established limits to produce acceptable wax patterns
  • Inspect wax patterns using visual and dimensional inspection methods to verify compliance with quality and dimensional requirements
  • Identify defects including flash, air bubbles, parting lines, flow lines, sink, positives, negatives, and core cracks, and determine appropriate disposition or repair
  • Repair minor defects, remove flash, clean patterns, and perform pattern finishing activities as required
  • Prepare, inject, clean, inspect, and process ceramic cores and soluble cores as required
  • Perform die, tooling, and equipment setups for production and engineering requirements
  • Complete production paperwork, routers, inventory transactions, and other required documentation accurately and timely
  • Utilize computer systems to enter, retrieve, and maintain production information as required
  • Monitor equipment performance, perform routine maintenance activities, and report equipment malfunctions or unusual conditions to supervision
  • Meet or exceed established production standards while maintaining acceptable quality levels
  • Assist in training, mentoring, and supporting less experienced operators and cross-functional team members as needed
  • Cross-train and perform work in other departments or functional areas as business needs require
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of production, quality, and operational objectives
SPECIAL SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to set up and operate standard and complex wax injection dies and equipment.
  • Ability to identify, evaluate, and repair common wax pattern defects while maintaining established quality standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret shop orders, sketches, specifications, operation instructions, and production documentation.
  • Ability to use measuring instruments including calipers, micrometers, gauges, rulers, and straight edges.
  • Basic computer skills with the ability to enter and retrieve production and inventory information.
  • Ability to exercise judgment when troubleshooting quality issues, making process adjustments, prioritizing work, and maintaining production flow.
  • Must be willing and able to cross-train and work in other departments as required.
  • Moderate physical effort handling and positioning dies, tooling, and materials with frequent lifting and moving of materials weighing up to 35 pounds.
  • Continuous visual concentration, attention to detail, and manual dexterity required to inspect patterns, operate equipment, and perform adjustments.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
  • Reports directly to the Wax Supervisor.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Six months or more of manufacturing experience required.
  • One year or more of wax injection, investment casting, or related manufacturing experience preferred
  • Ability to utilize basic shop math including arithmetic, decimals, and fractions
  • Experience working from shop orders, specifications, sketches, work instructions, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Experience using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, gauges, micrometers, and rulers preferred.
