The ideal candidate has 10-20 years of structural engineering experience across water/wastewater and building projects, along with strong project management, budgeting, and team leadership skills.

This role offers an opportunity to lead structural project teams, collaborate across disciplines from concept through construction, and mentor engineering staff while serving as the primary structural point of contact for clients, prime PMs, and subconsultants.

Essential Functions and Duties
  • Manage and deliver the structural engineering scope for a portfolio of environmental projects, ensuring work is completed on schedule, within budget, and to RK&K's quality standards.
  • Lead project teams in the preparation of structural analyses, calculations, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Assist in development of structural project scopes, fee proposals, and task schedules while tracking project budgets, labor hours, and milestone progress.
  • Provide technical direction on complex structural design tasks (reinforced concrete, structural steel, and masonry structures, including shallow/deep foundation systems, and liquid-retaining structures).
  • Perform quality control reviews across structural deliverables and oversee quality assurance for assigned tasks.
  • Assign resources, balance workload across team members, and mentor design engineers and mid-level structural engineers to support their technical and professional development.
  • Coordinate with process, architectural, mechanical, electrical, and civil discipline leads and prime project managers to resolve spatial, loading, and constructability constraints.
  • Serve as the primary structural point of contact for clients (internal and external), prime project managers, and subconsultants; participate in project meetings.
  • Plan and oversee site investigations and condition assessments, forensic evaluations, and structural condition inspection of existing facilities and structures.
  • Develop engineering reports and repair strategies and recommendations for deteriorated environmental structures.
  • Oversee construction-phase structural services, including shop drawing reviews, RFI responses, and field observations.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, industry standards, and client requirements.
  • Maintain Professional Engineer licensure and pursue ongoing professional development.
Required Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with a structural focus
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • 10 + years' experience in structural engineering, with a heavy emphasis on environmental facilities and building-type structures.
  • Strong background in structural design and proven proficiency applying building codes and structural design standards: IBC, ASCE 7, ACI 318, ACI 350, AISC 360, and TMS 402/602.
  • Strong understanding of lateral load paths (wind/seismic) and liquid-retaining concrete design.
  • Experience using structural analysis software (e.g., STAAD.Pro, RISA-3D, RAM).
  • Experience assisting with proposals or technical statements of work.
  • Excellent project management, communication, team leadership, and client relationship skills.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and project management skills.
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • 10+ years of consulting engineering experience in the Mid-Atlantic water/wastewater market.
  • Previous project management experience on municipal infrastructure projects.
  • Structural Engineering (SE) license or interest in pursuing.
  • Experience with treatment plant expansions and rehabilitation projects.
  • Active participation in professional organizations (e.g., ASCE, SEI, ACI).
  • Familiarity with Revit / BIM workflows
