Job summary

Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) in Columbia, SC is seeking a Project Manager with 5+ years to support a growing water and wastewater engineering team, contributing to the planning, design, and permitting of municipal water, wastewater, and utility infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will apply AutoCAD and GIS, develop positive client and regulatory relationships, and lead cross-disciplinary project delivery.

A PE license in SC and a civil/environmental engineering degree are preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in South Carolina.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with municipal water and/or wastewater projects.
  • Strong technical knowledge in water/wastewater engineering and project delivery.
  • Experience with planning, design, and construction of water/wastewater infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Support water and wastewater clients while upholding public health, safety, and GMC values.
  • Develop and refine project scopes with consultants, contractors, and regulators.
  • Apply AutoCAD and GIS to support planning, design, and documentation.
  • Provide technical design support for water and wastewater conveyance and treatment.
  • Collaborate across disciplines and offices on project planning and construction.
  • Coordinate engineering work across all project phases and ensure alignment.
  • Mentor junior staff and coordinate team efforts.

Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) is seeking a motivated Project Manager with 5+ years of experience to join our growing Columbia, SC office. The successful candidate will support a dynamic water and wastewater engineering team and contribute to the planning, design, and permitting of municipal water, wastewater, and utility infrastructure projects. Proficiency in water/wastewater system design, strong collaboration skills, and the ability to develop positive client and regulatory relationships are essential. This role offers the opportunity to work across a variety of project types while growing technical expertise within a supportive, team-oriented environment.

Role Responsibilities
  • Support assigned water and wastewater clients while upholding public health, safety, ethical standards, and GMC Core Values
  • Assist in developing, reviewing, and refining project scopes in coordination with consultants, contractors, and regulatory agencies
  • Apply working knowledge of AutoCAD and GIS to support planning, design, and documentation efforts
  • Provide technical design and engineering support for water and wastewater conveyance, treatment, and utility infrastructure projects
  • Collaborate across disciplines and offices on the planning, design, and construction of water and wastewater systems
  • Coordinate and contribute to engineering work throughout all phases of project delivery
  • Work closely with engineers, surveyors, field personnel, inspectors, contractors, and construction teams to ensure project alignment
  • Guide, coordinate, and mentor junior staff, technicians, designers, and administrative personnel as appropriate
  • Perform advanced drafting, modeling, and technical support tasks to meet project requirements
  • Respond to inquiries from contractors, utility staff, and regulatory agencies with clear, timely, and professional communication
  • Prepare and deliver technical reports, memoranda, plans, and presentations
  • Perform work under general supervision, exercising judgment on moderately complex or non-routine challenges
  • Support the development and continuous improvement of technical standards, design guidelines, and operational procedures
  • Represent the firm professionally with clients, stakeholders, and community partners
  • Participate in professional development, continuing education, and industry organizations
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with municipal water and/or wastewater projects
  • Strong technical knowledge and hands‑on experience in water and wastewater engineering
  • Experience with planning, design, and construction of water and wastewater infrastructure, including:
    • Water mains and booster pump stations
    • Gravity sewer mains, sewer lift stations, and force mains
    • Water and wastewater treatment plants
    • Hydraulic modeling and master planning
  • Ability to apply engineering principles to routine and moderately complex water/wastewater projects
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and technical judgment
  • Effective communication skills, including written reports, technical memoranda, and presentations
  • Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders
