Job Overview

GAI Consultants is seeking a driven Project Engineer to join our high‑performing water team, offering strong growth, leadership exposure, and impactful project work. An ideal candidate has water and sewer systems design and/or rehabilitation experience, permitting, and construction experience, and project bid package development. This role offers a clear path to expand into leadership, gain client exposure, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team delivering meaningful infrastructure solutions.

Job Duties
  • Lead and contribute to multidisciplinary teams delivering innovative water and wastewater infrastructure solutions from planning through construction, including collection and conveyance systems, water distribution networks, pump stations, storage and treatment facilities, and system evaluations, rehabilitation, and renewal and replacement initiatives.
  • Provide technical execution and oversight of design projects including schematic/preliminary design, design development, final design, specifications, permitting, bid‐phase services, and construction contract document production.
  • Direct and manage a project team of engineers and technicians.
  • Lead water/wastewater consulting tasks, including planning, detailed design calculations, alternative analysis and selection, cost estimating, equipment selection, project prioritization, and CIP development.
  • Provide schedule and budget development and management for safety, quality assurance/quality control while maintaining a high level of client satisfaction.
  • Mentor and guide junior staff while building your leadership profile and technical expertise.
  • Engage in regular client‑facing interaction with periodic work from client offices and in the field to support collaboration, delivery, and inspection.
  • Travel locally within Allegheny County (10–15%) and occasionally throughout the Mid‑Atlantic and adjacent states for client meetings and project site visits.

Certification / Licensure
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) License

Technical Responsibilities
  • Develop standards and guidelines.
  • Lead project task work in the practice in their area of specialization.
  • Guide design efforts within a project and develop design packages for bidding.
  • Develop appropriate design alternatives for complex engineering projects that consider realistic requirements, constraints, community input, permitting, and other regulatory constraints. Integrate advanced concepts to solve complex problems.
Project and Task Management
  • Oversee small to mid‑size, or multidiscipline project teams.
  • Implement effective teamwork and leadership.
  • Recommend personnel and funds required to carry out projects.
  • Oversee technical, legal, and financial task issues. Integrate these components into a complete project management plan for engineering projects.
  • Determine project task objectives and requirements.
Management Responsibility
  • Receive administrative supervision with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits.
  • Implement staff development plans within their organizational segment, including technical, management, and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrate financial acumen and familiarity with legal issues related to engineering practice.
Communication Skills
  • Possess strong technical writing, verbal communication, and leadership skills working in a dynamic team environment.
  • Provide exceptional negotiation of critical issues and effective persuasive communication to technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Initiate and maintain extensive contacts with key engineers and officials, or other organizations and companies.
